Chapter 9 - The Gathering of Light

Thanksgiving arrived in late November, bringing a light dusting of sparkling white snow that covered the autumn leaves like a delicate blanket of diamond dust.
The dining room of the white farmhouse was filled with laughter, music, and the delicious aroma of roasted turkey, fresh baked bread, and cherry cobbler. A massive oak table, built by Dominic’s own hands during the quiet winter months, was set for twelve people.
Seated around the table was a gathering that would have seemed impossible two years ago.
Old Man Miller and his wife sat near the head of the table, sharing stories of the county’s history. Across from them sat Agent Karen Ross—dressed in a comfortable civilian sweater instead of her rigid slate suit—laughing as she helped Clara balance a piece of cranberry sauce on her spoon. Two local farmhands and their families sat nearby, raising glasses of cider in warm toasts.
Dominic stood at the head of the table, wearing a dark wool sweater, pouring wine for his guests. His stoic, severe face had softened entirely, replaced by the calm, commanding presence of a family patriarch who had successfully defended his realm.
Megan sat to his right, her hand resting comfortably in his lap under the table.
"I'd like to make a toast," Miller said, standing up and holding his glass high.
The room fell quiet, everyone turning their attention to the elderly farmer.
"To the Vance family," Miller said, his voice rich with genuine affection. "Two years ago, this orchard was dying. The soil was cold, and the gates were rusted shut. Dominic and Megan didn't just buy a farm. They brought a family here. They gave this community hope, employment, and a home. May God bless this house, this land, and the new life coming in the spring."
"To the Vance family!" the table echoed in unison, clinking their glasses together.
Dominic looked around the room—at the smiling faces, at his happy daughter, at his glowing wife, at the federal agent who was now a trusted friend.
He leaned down, whispering in Megan’s ear. "I’m going to step outside for a moment."
Megan smiled, squeezing his hand. "Go on."
Dominic stepped out onto the wrap-around porch, pulling a heavy wool coat around his shoulders. The cold November wind cut through the trees, carrying the quiet hush of the coming winter.
He walked down the porch steps, stepping into the snow, looking up at the vast, clear night sky filled with millions of burning stars.
A footstep sounded softly behind him. Megan walked down the steps, wrapping a warm knitted shawl around her shoulders, stepping up beside him in the snow.
"Thinking about the past?" Megan asked gently, sliding her arm through his.
Dominic wrapped his coat around her side, keeping her warm against his body. "I was thinking about the first night I saw you in Boston," he admitted softly. "You were sitting in that quiet corner of the art gallery, painting a canvas of an ocean you had never seen. You looked so fragile... but so fierce."
"I was terrified back then, Dominic," Megan murmured, looking up at the stars. "I thought my life was just a series of rooms I had to hide in."
"And now?" Dominic asked, looking down at her face.
Megan turned to face him, her blue eyes shining with absolute, unshakeable peace under the moonlight.

"Now I have a home," Megan said, placing her hand over his heart. "A home that has no walls big enough to hold our happiness."
Dominic pulled her close, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her lips as the quiet winter snow began to fall around them, washing away every last memory of the dark years, leaving only the pure, brilliant canvas of their future.
