Chapter 6 - Ashes and Renewal

Forty-eight hours after the night of the siege, the July sun returned to western Michigan, washing the valley in brilliant, golden warmth.

The estate looked remarkably restored. A specialized federal cleanup crew provided by Agent Ross had worked around the clock, removing the damaged vehicles, repairing the wooden gates, and replacing the front door of the white farmhouse with solid, fresh oak. To any passing neighbor, it appeared as though nothing more than a brief summer storm had passed through the orchard.

On the front lawn, Clara was sitting on a thick woolen blanket, happily stacking colorful wooden blocks. Beside her sat the golden retriever puppy, panting contentedly in the shade of a massive maple tree.

Old Man Miller stepped down from his tractor near the barn, walking over to Dominic with a heavy wooden toolbox in his hands.

"The new hinges on the barn door are set, Dominic," Miller said, wiping sweat from his brow. "Firm as a mountain."

Dominic shook the older man’s hand with genuine warmth. "Thank you, Miller. For taking Clara the other night."

"You don't need to thank me, son," Miller said softly, looking at Clara with a grandfatherly smile. "You gave this valley new life when you bought this trust. We protect our own around here."

As Miller walked back to his tractor, Megan emerged from the farmhouse carrying a tray with three glasses of cold iced tea. She wore a simple white sundress, her long hair drying in the warm sun, looking radiant and completely untouched by the violence of two nights ago.

She handed a glass to Dominic, leaning against his side as they watched Clara knock over her tower of wooden blocks with a joyful squeal.

"Ross called ten minutes ago," Megan said softly, sipping her tea.

Dominic took a drink, his gray eyes fixed on his daughter. "What did she say?"

"Gabriel Rossi signed a full confession in federal court this morning," Megan revealed. "He’s being transferred to a supermax facility in Colorado. He’ll never see the light of day again. The Department of Justice officially declared the Rossi case closed."

Dominic set his glass down on a nearby wooden stump. He wrapped his arms around Megan from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder, feeling the steady, warm rhythm of her breathing.

"It’s really over," Dominic whispered, a profound sense of lightness spreading through his chest—a feeling he had never experienced in his thirty-eight years of life.

"It was over the moment you chose us, Dominic," Megan turned in his arms, framing his jaw with her soft hands. "You broke the cycle."

Dominic looked into her deep blue eyes, seeing his entire world reflected back at him. He leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a tender, lingering kiss that tasted of sweet tea and summer sunshine.

Clara let out a loud giggle from the blanket, toddling over to them on her shaky legs, grabbing onto Dominic’s jeans with her tiny hands.

Dominic laughed—a rich, booming sound that echoed across the quiet orchard. He reached down, scooping Clara into his arms, tossing her gently into the air before catching her against his chest. Clara squealed with delight, burying her face in his neck.

"Come on," Dominic said, taking Megan’s hand with his free fingers. "Let's walk through the orchard."
