Chapter 2 - The Firewall

By midnight, a thick summer fog had rolled in off Lake Michigan, blanketing the cherry orchards in a dense, ghostly haze.

Inside the basement of the white farmhouse, the quiet rustic atmosphere had vanished, replaced by the grim reality of a tactical command center. Dominic stood before a heavy workbench, assembling a heavy-frame semi-automatic rifle with practiced, lightning-fast precision. Beside him sat three reinforced metallic cases—gear he had buried five feet beneath the floorboards of the barn two years ago, hoping never to touch again.

Megan walked down the stairs wearing dark tactical pants, a reinforced Kevlar vest, and a lightweight sidearm holstered at her hip. Her hair was pulled back into a tight braid.

"Clara is secured?" Dominic asked, not pausing as he checked the action of a weapon.

"Old Man Miller and his wife took her through the access tunnel an hour ago," Megan said, stepping up beside him. "They’re at the cabin across the county line. She’s safe, Dominic. She thinks it's a game."

Dominic set the rifle down and turned to face her. He reached out, his rough, scarred palm framing her face gently. "You should be with her, Megan. You don't have to stand in the fire with me tonight."

Megan placed her hand over his, leaning into his touch. "Do you remember what I told you on the porch when we first moved here?"

"You said we protect each other," Dominic murmured softly.

"We protect our home, Dominic," Megan corrected, her voice burning with conviction. "I’m not a helpless witness anymore. I’m your wife. I’m Clara’s mother. Gabriel Rossi wants to burn our life down? Then we burn him first."

Dominic stared into her eyes, seeing the quiet, terrifying strength that had once drawn him out of the darkness in Boston. He leaned down, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of iron and devotion.

"All right," Dominic whispered against her lips. "Then we give them a welcome."

He turned to a tactical monitor on the workbench. The screen displayed a high-resolution heat map of the orchard, fed by low-frequency infrared sensors Dominic had secretly embedded along the perimeter fence during the farm’s construction.

Three red heat signatures had just crossed the northern tree line near the cherry processing shed. Two miles back, four more signatures were dismounting from an blacked-out SUV.

"They aren't using heavy transport," Dominic analyzed, his eyes scanning the telemetry. "Infiltration unit. Night-vision optics, suppressed short-barreled rifles, light armor. Gabriel sent his scouts ahead to cut the power and secure the house before he steps in."

"They don't know about the automated grid in the south orchard," Megan noted, pointing at the screen.

"No," Dominic smiled—a dark, cold expression that would have terrified any enemy. "They think they’re walking into a farm owned by a retired accountant and an artist. Let’s correct their mistake."

Dominic picked up a heavy tactical radio, handing an earpiece to Megan. "Stay in the lower cellar until I trigger the northern perimeter. Once the scouts enter the processing shed, lock the hydraulic doors from the secondary control board."

"And Gabriel?" Megan asked, checking her pistol's magazine.

"Gabriel is mine," Dominic said simply.

He slipped into the shadows of the basement access portal, vanishing into the foggy night without making a sound.
