Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Harvest

The sun was sinking behind the western edge of the cherry orchard, casting long, crimson shadows across the golden fields of the Michigan trust. On the wrap-around porch, the wicker swing moved lazily in the cooling evening breeze. Dominic held Clara against his chest, his large, scarred hand gently rocking the fifteen-month-old girl to sleep.

Megan sat beside him, resting her head against his shoulder. The air smelled of damp earth and ripe cherries—a scent that had come to mean absolute peace.

"She’s out," Megan whispered, a tender smile playing on her lips as she looked at her daughter’s dark curls.

"She tried to stay awake," Dominic murmured, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated against Megan’s shoulder. "Stubborn. Just like her mother."

"Just like her father," Megan countered softly, reaching over to kiss his jawline.

Their peaceful silence was broken by the crunch of tires on the gravel driveway. A unassuming dark blue sedan pulled up near the barn. Dominic’s eyes narrowed instantly, his body shifting into a relaxed posture that concealed lethal readiness. His right hand casually dropped to the side of the swing, inches from the concealed holster mounted under the wooden bench.

A tall woman in a slate-gray suit stepped out of the vehicle. Her sharp features and disciplined posture screamed federal authority. It was Agent Karen Ross—the chief analyst who had helped them dismantle the remnants of the Boston syndicate eighteen months ago, under an off-the-books agreement of total silence.

Dominic stood up smoothly, cradling Clara with one arm while his left hand guided Megan gently behind his flank. "Ross. You’re violating our agreement. You don't come to Michigan."

"I wouldn't be here if I had a choice, Dominic," Ross said, her voice tight as she walked toward the porch, stopping at the base of the wooden steps. She looked at Megan with a brief, respectful nod. "Hello, Megan."

"What’s wrong, Karen?" Megan asked, stepping up beside Dominic, her hand resting on his back. She felt the rigid tension in his muscles.

Ross pulled a thick, encrypted satellite phone from her jacket and set it on the railing. "Three days ago, a private bank in Geneva was breached. No money was taken. Only a physical safety deposit box registered to the late Victor Rossi—the man whose syndicate you brought down in Toronto."

Dominic’s gray eyes turned to ice. "Victor’s assets were liquidated and seized by the Crown."

"Not all of them," Ross replied grimly. "The box contained a hard drive with a live ledger. It lists every corrupt federal judge, international politician, and black-market broker Victor bribed over three decades. But more importantly... it contained the unredacted relocation files for key witnesses who testified against his inner circle."

Megan felt a cold drop of sweat trace her spine. "Our files?"

"The encryption held for forty-eight hours," Ross said, her voice dropping an octave. "It was cracked six hours ago. A hit team led by Victor’s younger brother, Gabriel Rossi, intercepted a federal transport in Montreal this morning. Gabriel isn't looking to rebuild the family empire, Dominic. He’s liquidating every person who put his brother in the ground."

"Gabriel was supposed to be in a maximum-security penitentiary in Quebec," Dominic said coldly.

"He escaped during a prison transfer two weeks ago," Ross revealed. "He has forty million dollars in black-market funding and a squad of former European mercenaries who have nothing to lose. He knows you’re in Michigan."

Dominic looked down at Clara, who stirred slightly in his arms, her tiny thumb pressed against her lips. The sanctuary they had bled to build—the orchard, the farmhouse, the peace—was suddenly surrounded by an invisible net.

"How long do we have?" Megan asked, her voice steady despite the fear hammering in her chest.

"A strike team left a private airfield in Ontario two hours ago," Ross said, pulling a set of keys from her pocket. "They’re heading south toward the border. I have a safe house prepped in northern Wisconsin, fully off-grid—"

"No," Dominic interrupted, his voice dropping to a terrifying, absolute calm. He handed Clara into Megan’s arms, looking into his wife's eyes with a fierce, burning devotion. "We don't run anymore, Megan. If we run to Wisconsin, Gabriel follows. If we run to Canada, he follows. The moment I let him turn my family into prey, we lose everything we built."

Megan held Clara tightly against her chest, feeling her daughter’s warm breath. She looked at the orchard, at the white farmhouse, at the life they had won out of blood and ashes.

"He’s right," Megan said, turning to Ross, her blue eyes flashing with unyielding resolve. "We spent years looking over our shoulders. We built a home here, Karen. We aren't abandoning it."

Dominic looked at Megan, a rare spark of fierce pride igniting in his stoic face. He turned back to Ross. "Tell your directors to clear the local airspace and pull back local law enforcement ten miles. Give me twelve hours."

Ross stared at Dominic, knowing the monster that lay dormant beneath his quiet demeanor. "If you do this here, Dominic, the trust—"

"The trust will be protected," Dominic said, walking down the steps until he stood face-to-face with the federal agent. "Because Gabriel Rossi won't survive the night."
