Chapter 2 - The Shadows of the Empire

By midnight, the penthouse was quiet, but the atmosphere inside remained charged with tension.

Finn had finally fallen asleep in the master bedroom, his small fingers still clutching both the towel crane and the blue rabbit under his chin. For the first time in two years, he had slept without requiring heavy sedative teas or hours of restless thrashing.

In the suite's private study, surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rain-slicked skyline of downtown Seattle, Rowan sat behind a dark oak desk. Across from him stood Meg, wearing her faded denim jacket over her housekeeping uniform, holding her canvas tote bag.

Sitting on the leather sofa was Arthur Vance, Rowan’s chief legal advisor and long-time family confidant—a man whose polished exterior hid a terrifying mastery of corporate warfare and political influence.

"Meg Connell," Arthur said, reading from a tablet that had been updated by private investigators within thirty minutes of her stepping into the suite. "Twenty-seven years old. Raised in rural eastern Washington. Former elementary education student before dropping out three years ago following the death of your father. No criminal record. No debt except modest medical bills. No ties to the Moretti family or any secondary shipping syndicates."

Meg crossed her arms, standing her ground. "Are you always this charming when someone helps your boss's child?"

"Forgive Arthur," Rowan said, stepping over to the bar to pour two fingers of scotch, though he left the glass untouched on the counter. "In my world, unexpected kindness is usually a Trojan horse. I have enemies, Meg. Dangerous men who would use my son to pull my empire down."

"I'm a maid, Mr. Ashby," Meg replied evenly. "I make eighteen dollars an hour sweeping floors and replacing shampoo bottles. The only thing I’m after is making sure that little boy doesn't feel like he's drowning inside his own head."

Rowan walked over to her, stopping just inches away. Up close, Meg could see the sheer weight he carried—the shadows under his sharp jaw, the quiet grief that lingered around his dark gray eyes.

"I want to hire you," Rowan declared softly. "Not as a maid. As Finn’s personal companion and caretaker. You will live here in the penthouse suite. You will have a private apartment wing, a dedicated vehicle, and a monthly salary of twenty thousand dollars."

Meg blinked, stunned by the sheer magnitude of the number. "Twenty thousand a month? You're insane."

"I am a desperate father," Rowan corrected, his voice dropping into a register of deadly seriousness. "For two years, my son has lived in a silent tomb. Tonight, because of a folded towel, he looked at another human being with trust. That makes you more valuable to me than any board member, lawyer, or fleet of ships I own."

"And what about your 'enemies'?" Meg asked, gesturing toward Marcus, who stood guard by the heavy suite door. "If I take this job, am I stepping into a war zone?"

Rowan’s jaw tightened. "My late wife, Elena, came from the Moretti syndicate—a rival faction that controls the northern docks. Her father, Don Carmine Moretti, believes I was responsible for the fire that took her life. He has spent two years trying to claim legal custody of Finn to strip my voting shares in the harbor authority."

He looked Meg straight in the eyes. "I will protect you with everything I own, Meg. But I won't lie to you. The water here is deep, and it is freezing cold."

Meg thought of Finn’s dark, exhausted eyes, his tiny hands pressed against his ears, trying to block out a terrifying world. She thought of her own quiet, lonely apartment across town, filled with memories of her late father and unpaid bills.

"I don't need twenty thousand a month," Meg said quietly. "Give me ten, pay off my father's remaining hospital bill, and promise me one thing."

"Anything," Rowan said.

"You don't treat me like an employee when it comes to Finn. If I say he needs space, he gets space. No board meetings, no security clearances, no corporate politics near his nursery."

Rowan extended his hand. "Deal."
