Chapter 5 - The Gala of Knives

The annual Seattle Maritime Charity Gala was held in the grand ballroom of the Bellevue Regency Hotel—a glittering spectacle of crystal chandeliers, silk gowns, high-stakes political maneuvering, and quiet corporate threats.
Rowan had insisted Meg attend with him.
"Carmine’s legal team is going to use the court hearing to claim Finn is living in an unstable, isolated environment," Rowan had explained in the study two nights prior. "I need the city's elite to see that Finn has a stable, capable caretaker who commands respect. I need you beside me, Meg."
When Meg stepped down the penthouse stairs on the night of the gala, Rowan felt his breath catch in his throat.
She wore a floor-length dark emerald silk gown that Arthur Vance had sourced from a high-end designer in Milan. Her long auburn hair was swept up into an elegant, soft arrangement, exposing the long line of her neck. She looked regal, striking, and entirely breathtaking.
"You look..." Rowan hesitated, his usual eloquence deserting him completely. "...incredible, Meg."
"I feel like an imposter," Meg admitted, adjusting a delicate diamond bracelet Rowan had placed in her dressing room. "I’m more comfortable in rubber gloves and non-slip shoes."
"You belong in any room you choose to step into," Rowan said softly, offering her his arm.
When they entered the grand ballroom, a collective hush fell over the crowd of billionaires, politicians, and media moguls. For two years, Rowan Ashby had attended public events alone, distant, cold, and unapproachable. Seeing him enter with an exquisite, unfamiliar woman at his side sent shockwaves through the room.
Across the ballroom, standing near a towering champagne pyramid, was Don Carmine Moretti, flanked by his eldest son, Marco Moretti—a cruel, sharp-featured man who managed the syndicate’s private shipping security.
"Look at him," Marco hissed to his father, sipping his drink. "Parading that maid around like she’s royalty."
"Let him parade her," Carmine grunted darkly. "The girl has no family, no political backing, and no legal standing. By midnight, we will ensure she becomes a liability Rowan cannot afford to keep."
As Rowan was pulled into a conversation with the state governor regarding harbor infrastructure bonds, Meg stepped toward the terrace doors to catch a breath of cool evening air.
A smooth, oily voice sounded behind her.
"Miss Connell, isn't it?"
Meg turned to see Marco Moretti standing in the shadows of the velvet drapes, holding two glasses of red wine.
"Mr. Moretti," Meg said coolly, keeping her distance. "I believe your father was told to stay away from us."
"My father is an old man who believes in legal courts," Marco purred, taking a step closer, his eyes lingering on her necklace with predatory intent. "I, on the other hand, believe in simple transactions. Rowan Ashby is using you, girl. He’s using you as a human shield against our custody lawsuit. How much is he paying you? Half a million? A million?"
Marco reached into his jacket, pulling out a sleek black leather checkbook. "I will double whatever he gave you. All you have to do is sign a sworn affidavit stating that Rowan is mentally unstable, abusive toward his staff, and unfit to raise my sister's son."
Meg looked at the checkbook, then looked up into Marco’s cold, arrogant face.
She took the glass of red wine from his hand.
Without skipping a beat, she tipped the glass forward, pouring the dark red liquid directly over Marco’s pristine white tuxedo shirt and tailored jacket.
Marco gasped in shock, jumping back as the wine soaked through his clothes. "What the hell are you doing, you crazy bitch?!"
"I’m declining your transaction," Meg said calmly, setting the empty glass on a passing waiter’s tray. "And if you ever come near me or Finn again, I won't use wine next time."
Rowan’s voice thundered from behind her. "Is there a problem here, Marco?"
Rowan stepped onto the terrace, accompanied by Marcus and two armed security personnel. Rowan’s face was dark with absolute fury, his fist clenched at his side.
Marco wiped his stained shirt, his face twisting into a bitter, embarrassed sneer. "You chose a wild dog, Ashby. Enjoy her while you can." He shoved past the security guards and disappeared into the crowd.
Rowan turned to Meg, his eyes searching her face with deep concern. "Did he touch you? Did he hurt you?"
"No," Meg smiled faintly, smoothing her emerald gown. "He just ruined a perfectly good glass of Cabernet."

Rowan let out a low, genuine laugh—a sound so rare and light that even Marcus looked over in astonishment.
"Meg Connell," Rowan whispered, stepping close enough that she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "You are truly extraordinary."
