Chapter 4 - The Shadow at the Gates

The fragile peace inside the penthouse was shattered three weeks later during a stormy Thursday afternoon.

Meg and Finn were sitting on the plush rug in the main living room, surrounded by an entire 'zoo' of towel animals—elephants, giraffes, frogs, and birds—when the heavy mahogany front doors of the suite were pushed open without warning.

Marcus instantly drew his sidearm, his body shifting into a defensive posture, but he stood down when he saw who stepped into the foyer.

An elderly man carrying a gold-headed walking cane stepped into the room. He wore a heavy wool coat, his hair snow-white, his face lined with deep, menacing wrinkles. Behind him stood three imposing men in dark leather coats.

It was Don Carmine Moretti—the head of the rival syndicate and Finn’s maternal grandfather.

"Carmine," Rowan’s voice rang out from the upper balcony. He descended the grand staircase with slow, deliberate steps, his face turning into a mask of pure, lethal hostility. "You are trespassing in my home."

"I am visiting my grandson, Rowan," Carmine spat, his voice like gravel grinding under a boot. "A right that you have denied me for two long years while you keep him hidden away in this glass cage like a broken doll."

Carmine’s dark eyes swept across the room, landing on Meg, who immediately shifted her body to block Finn from the older man’s aggressive gaze.

"And who is this?" Carmine sneered, gesturing toward Meg with his cane. "Another high-priced nanny you hired to play mother to my daughter's child? Look at this ridiculous nonsense..." Carmine raised his cane and struck a soft towel giraffe sitting on the floor, sending it tumbling across the rug.

Finn let out a sharp, panicked gasp, instantly curling into a ball behind Meg’s back, his small hands clutching the hem of her sweater.

Meg’s blood boiled. She stood up slowly, stepping directly between Don Carmine Moretti and the child.

"Touch one more thing in this room," Meg said, her voice dropping into a deadly, ice-cold register that made Carmine’s bodyguards glance at her in surprise, "and I will personally throw you out into the hallway myself, old man."

Carmine’s eyes widened with outrage. "Do you know who I am, girl?"

"I don't care if you're the mayor or the devil," Meg replied fiercely, keeping her posture tall and unyielding. "You came into a house where a six-year-old child is healing, you brought three armed thugs, and you knocked over his toys to prove how strong you are. You're not powerful. You're just cruel."

Rowan reached the bottom of the stairs, stepping right alongside Meg, his shoulder brushing against hers. A terrifying, dark smile played across Rowan’s lips.

"You heard her, Carmine," Rowan said coldly, his hand resting casually inside his jacket. "My house. My staff. Get out before I let my security team exercise their legal rights regarding armed home invasion."

Carmine stared at Meg for three long seconds, his jaw working silently as he processed her total lack of fear. He leaned heavily on his cane, sneering at Rowan.

"The custody hearing is set for next month, Ashby," Carmine warned, backing toward the door. "The court will see that you've turned my grandson into a delicate nervous wreck cared for by low-class maids. Finn belongs with the Moretti family, and I will tear down every dock you own until I have him."

As the heavy doors slammed shut behind Carmine and his men, Meg turned around immediately and dropped to her knees, pulling Finn into a warm, protective embrace.

Finn buried his face in the crook of her neck, his little arms wrapping tightly around her shoulders.

Above them, Rowan looked down at Meg, his gray eyes burning with an emotion far deeper and far more dangerous than simple gratitude.
