Chapter 7 - The Trial of Blood and Fire

The panic room was safe, soundproofed, and stocked with emergency supplies, but the silence inside was deafening.
For forty-five endless minutes, Meg sat on the cushioned floor of the bunker, holding Finn tightly against her chest. She could hear nothing from the outside world—no gunshots, no sirens, no voices.
Finn lay quietly in her lap, his small fingers tracing the folded edges of his towel rabbit.
Suddenly, the green indicator light on the internal door console flickered. The heavy steel pneumatic locks disengaged with a loud hiss, and the door slid open.
Meg instantly grabbed a heavy metal fire extinguisher from the wall, raising it above her head, ready to strike.
"Meg! It's me!"
Rowan stood in the doorway.
His dark sweater was torn at the shoulder, blood seeping through the fabric. His face was covered in soot, sweat, and minor glass cuts, but his gray eyes were blazing with pure, triumphant life.
Behind him stood Marcus, holding a heavy tactical rifle, alongside six armed officers from the Seattle Police Department SWAT team.
Meg dropped the fire extinguisher. It hit the floor with a loud clang as she threw her arms around Rowan’s neck, burying her face in his blood-stained shoulder.
Rowan held her tightly, wrapping his good arm around her waist, lifting her slightly off the floor, his head resting against her neck as he breathed in the scent of her hair.
"It's over," Rowan whispered, his voice cracking with intense emotion. "It's all over, Meg."
"Marco...?" Meg choked out.
"Marco and his team were intercepted by the SWAT units I had stationed on the lower executive floors three days ago," Rowan revealed, stepping back to look down at her. "We knew Marco was planning a breach. We used the elevator security pass as bait. Marco is in handcuffs, facing federal charges for armed invasion, attempted kidnapping, and murder."
Rowan dropped to one knee, looking at Finn, who stepped out from behind Meg’s robe.
Finn looked at his father’s bloody shoulder, then looked at his father’s face.
Slowly, carefully, Finn reached into his pocket and pulled out his towel rabbit. He held it out, pressing it gently against Rowan’s injured arm, as if trying to heal the wound with his favorite toy.
"Dad..." Finn said.
Not a whisper. Not a rasp. A clear, distinct, beautiful child's voice that echoed through the small steel panic room.
"Dad... hurt?"
Rowan froze. The SWAT officers in the hallway went completely still.

Rowan pulled his six-year-old son into his chest, holding him so tight that the boy let out a small, happy giggle.
"I'm not hurt, buddy," Rowan sobbed openly, kissing Finn’s hair over and over again. "I'm not hurt at all."
