Chapter 6 - The Siege of Meridian

The retaliatory strike came faster and more brutally than anyone anticipated.
Three days after the gala, a massive storm hit Seattle, knocking out power lines across the downtown financial district. Torrential rain lashed against the high-rise glass of the Meridian Tower, turning the city lights below into a blurred sea of neon and gray.
Inside the penthouse, the emergency backup generators hummed to life, casting a dim, golden glow over the long hallways.
At 2:00 AM, the emergency alarm on Marcus’s radio chirped sharply.
Meg was awakened by a heavy, urgent knock on her suite door. She threw on a plush robe and opened it to find Rowan standing in the hallway, wearing black tactical trousers and a dark sweater, a heavy pistol secured in a shoulder holster.
"Rowan? What's going on?" Meg asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.
"The parking garage security feeds just went dead," Rowan said, his voice flat, calm, and terrifyingly focused. "A team of six men breached the basement service elevator using Marco Moretti’s security pass. They're coming up."
Meg’s breath caught in her throat. "Finn..."
"Marcus and three guards are holding the main private elevator foyer," Rowan ordered, taking Meg by the shoulders. "I need you to take Finn into the panic room behind the study library. Lock the steel reinforcement door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me or Marcus. Do you understand?"
"Rowan, no! You can't fight them alone!" Meg cried out, grabbing his arm.
"They aren't here to compromise, Meg," Rowan said softly, reaching up to gently cup her cheek with his hand. "Marco knows he’s losing the custody battle. He’s here to take Finn by force and eliminate anyone who stands in his way. I will burn this entire tower to the ground before I let them touch either of you."
Before Meg could answer, the glass windows of the outer living room shattered violently as heavy breaching charges blew open the private elevator doors at the end of the hall.
Gunfire echoed through the marble foyer—sharp, deafening pops that shattered silence into horror.
"GO!" Rowan roared, shoving Meg toward the nursery.
Meg sprinted into Finn’s room. The little boy was already awake, sitting up in his bed, his hands clamped tightly over his ears, his body shaking uncontrollably as the sound of gunfire echoed through the penthouse walls.
"Finn!" Meg slid across the floor, pulling him into her arms, wrapping her robe around his small body. "Look at me, sweetie! Look at me!"
Finn opened his dark eyes, tears streaming down his pale cheeks. He held out his little hands, clutching a single white towel rabbit that Meg had made for him earlier that evening.
"Boat..." Finn rasped out, his voice shaking with terror. "Boat... fire..."
The trauma of the harbor fire that had taken his mother was flooding back into his small mind, brought on by the smell of smoke and the sound of shattering glass.
"No fire here, baby," Meg whispered fiercely, lifting him into her arms. "I've got you. I've got you."
She carried him sprinted into the study, ducking behind the heavy oak desk as bullets chewed through the glass display cases along the hallway.
She reached the hidden panel behind the mahogany bookshelf, pressed the emergency code Rowan had given her, and the heavy steel reinforcement door slid open with a quiet pneumatic hiss.
She threw herself inside with Finn just as a heavy boot slammed open the study door behind them.
Through the closing gap of the steel door, Meg saw Marco Moretti step into the study, holding a suppressed automatic rifle, his face smeared with rain and gunpowder.

"Find the kid!" Marco screamed to his men. "Kill the maid!"
The steel door slammed shut with a heavy CLANG, sealing Meg and Finn inside absolute darkness and safety.
