Chapter 2 - The Glitz and the Hollow

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel glistened under the crystal chandeliers. Manhattan’s elite—venture capitalists, hedge fund managers, tech executives, and high-society socialites—clinked champagne flutes at the annual TechVanguard Gala.

Ethan Marlowe stood near the ice sculpture in the center of the room, wearing a bespoke Tom Ford tuxedo. Beside him stood Vanessa Vance, wearing a emerald green backless silk gown that cost fifteen thousand dollars—charged directly to Marlowe Technologies’ corporate expense account.

Around her neck was a diamond choker. It wasn't Claire's wedding necklace—that piece remained sealed in an evidence locker at the 19th Precinct following Vanessa's humiliating interrogation two weeks prior—but it was expensive enough to signal to the world that she was now the woman on Ethan Marlowe’s arm.

"He looks confident," murmured Julian Mercer, Arthur Vance’s junior partner, who stood near the bar beside Claire.

Claire wore a tailored navy velvet gown that elegantly accommodated her faint bump. She held a glass of sparkling water with lemon, standing in the shadowed alcove near the library entrance. She had entered quietly, avoiding the red carpet photographers.

"He just closed the memorandum of understanding with the Singapore fund," Claire observed, watching Ethan laugh at a joke told by a senior partner from Sequoia Capital. "Look at his body language. He thinks he’s invincible."

Across the room, Vanessa caught sight of Claire. Her cheerful expression froze for a fraction of a second before twisting into a smirk of pure triumph. She whispered something in Ethan’s ear.

Ethan turned. When he saw Claire standing calmly by the bar, his jaw tightened. He took two glasses of champagne from a passing waiter’s tray and strolled across the polished marble floor toward her, with Vanessa trailing right behind him like a proud peacock.

"Claire," Ethan said, his tone dripping with patronizing pity. "I’m surprised you came. In your condition... I assumed you were resting in the apartment."

"It’s my apartment, Ethan," Claire replied evenly. "And my doctor advised that light social outings are good for my circulation."

Vanessa stepped forward, sliding her arm through Ethan’s. "We heard Arthur Vance sent back our initial separation agreement without counter-offering. Honestly, Claire, dragging this out through the courts won't change the outcome. Ethan has been very generous offering you two million dollars when the company needs every cent for its Series C push."

Claire looked at Vanessa, her eyes sweeping from the cheap confidence in her sister’s smile down to the emerald dress.

"You're using the corporate credit card for your wardrobe, Vanessa," Claire remarked softly. "I hope Ethan’s Chief Financial Officer noted that personal expenditures drawn from enterprise credit lines prior to a public funding round constitute a breach of fiduciary duty."

Ethan’s smile vanished. "Don't lecture us on corporate governance, Claire. You were a contractor who helped write early documentation. You don't understand where the market is now. Marlowe Technologies is currently valued at eight hundred million, and by next week, we hit the billion-dollar mark."

"A billion dollars," Claire repeated, nodding thoughtfully. "Based on the enterprise rollout of the automated logistics core?"

"Precisely," Ethan said boasting. "We just signed the Port of Los Angeles expansion contract. The algorithm performs flawlessly."

"It’s a magnificent piece of code," Claire agreed. "I know the person who wrote it very well."

Ethan chuckled dismissively. "You always had an inflated sense of your contribution, Claire. You wrote basic routines. I turned it into an enterprise platform. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have dinner with the lead investor from Temasek."

"Ethan," Claire called out softly just as he turned away.

He paused, looking back over his shoulder. "What?"

"Did you read the complete asset schedule attached to the Aegis Analytics license agreement when you signed the Series C term sheet?"

Ethan frowned, a shadow of irritation passing over his face. "What are you talking about? Aegis is just an administrative vehicle my original legal team set up."

"You should read section four, clause B," Claire said gently. "Before the Singapore fund wire-transfers the first fifty million dollars on Friday."

"You’re playing mind games because you’re bitter," Vanessa spat, her voice laced with sudden hostility. "Come on, Ethan. She’s just trying to ruin your night."

Claire watched them walk toward the VIP dining area. Beside her, Julian Mercer took a sip of his bourbon.

"The Singapore fund’s audit team arrives at Marlowe Technologies’ headquarters tomorrow morning at nine o'clock," Julian whispered. "Arthur has already delivered the formal Notice of Impending License Termination to their lead auditor."

Claire looked down at her small belly, placing her hand gently over the three little lives resting safely inside her.

"Let the audit begin," she said.
