Chapter 7 - The Reckoning of Vanessa

While Ethan sank into obscurity and legal peril in New York, Vanessa Vance’s attempt to carve out a new luxury life in Miami hit a brick wall.
The "real estate promoter" she had fled with turned out to be a mid-level scam artist who ran an illegal crypto-mining operation out of a rented villa in Coral Gables. Within three months of her arrival, federal agents raided the villa, seizing all assets, including the designer bags, jewelry, and luxury vehicles Vanessa had acquired using funds Ethan had illegally transferred to her personal accounts prior to Marlowe Technologies’ bankruptcy.
On a hot, humid Tuesday morning in April, Vanessa sat in a sterile, fluorescent-lit interrogation room at the Federal Courthouse in downtown Miami.
Across from her sat Assistant United States Attorney Richard Morales and two senior investigators from the Internal Revenue Service.
Vanessa wore no makeup. Her dark hair was pulled back into a messy ponytail, and her clothes were cheap garments bought from a local pharmacy after her luxury luggage was impounded as evidence of wire fraud proceeds.
"Ms. Vance," Attorney Morales said, sliding a thick ledger across the table. "We have traced sixty-four separate corporate wire transfers from Marlowe Technologies’ primary operating account directly to your personal account over an eight-month period. Totaling six hundred and eighty thousand dollars."
Vanessa shook her head frantically, tears smudging her tired eyes. "I didn't know where the money came from! Ethan told me it was his personal bonus distribution! I’m a victim here!"
"You were listed as an 'Independent Marketing Consultant' on the corporate payroll, Ms. Vance," Morales countered coldly. "Yet there is zero evidence of any work performed. In fact, text messages recovered from Mr. Marlowe’s phone show you explicitly demanding cash transfers in exchange for remaining in the relationship."
Vanessa buried her face in her hands, weeping bitterly. "I have no money! Ethan is broke! My sister has billions! Why aren't you going after her?! She took the whole company!"
Morales looked at her with utter disdain. "Your sister, Claire Vance, operated entirely within the law. She licensed her proprietary intellectual property under a legal contract that your former partner breached. Furthermore, Miss Vance has personally covered the severance packages for all eighty lower-level employees who lost their jobs when Marlowe Technologies collapsed."
Morales opened a blue folder.
"The grand jury has returned a six-count indictment against you for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, tax evasion, and receipt of stolen corporate funds," Morales announced. "Unless you enter a full guilty plea today and agree to testify against Ethan Marlowe in his upcoming federal trial, we will recommend a sentence of seven years in a federal penitentiary."
Vanessa gasped, air catching violently in her throat. "Seven years?! No! No, please! Let me call my sister! Let me call Claire! She’ll pay for a lawyer! She’s my sister!"
Morales looked at her for a long moment before closing the file.
"We contacted Claire Vance’s legal counsel two days ago to ask if she wished to post bail on your behalf," Morales said quietly.
Vanessa leaned forward, hope flaring wildly in her desperate eyes. "What did she say?! What did Claire say?!"

Morales picked up his pen. "Her attorney informed us that Miss Vance does not recognize you as family, and suggested you make use of the federal public defender’s office."
The room seemed to spin around Vanessa. The wall of illusions she had built out of jealousy, theft, and spite finally shattered into dust, leaving her with nothing but the cold iron chairs and the looming shadow of a prison cell.
