Chapter 4 - The Tides Turn

By 2:00 PM that same afternoon, news of the catastrophe at Marlowe Technologies spread through the financial news outlets like a wildfire. Bloomberg published a breaking headline:
MARLOWE TECHNOLOGIES LOGISTICS PLATFORM HALTED NATIONWIDE AMID INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY DISPUTE; SERIES C FUNDING COLLAPSES.
The company’s stock valuation, traded on the private secondary markets, plummeted by eighty percent in four hours. Enterprise clients began sending panicked notices of contract termination.
In the penthouse apartment on Park Avenue—the luxury residence Ethan had leased three months earlier to impress Vanessa—chaos reigned.
Vanessa sat on the velvet sofa, surrounded by shopping bags from Saks Fifth Avenue and Chanel, staring at her laptop screen in horror. Her phone was buzzing continuously with calls from her friends, asking if the news was true.
The front door slammed open. Ethan stormed into the foyer, his tie undone, his suit jacket wrinkled, throwing his briefcase violently against the wall.
"Ethan!" Vanessa cried out, jumping up. "What is happening on Twitter?! People are saying the company is going bankrupt! Is the Singapore money coming or not?!"
Ethan spun around, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "The Singapore deal is dead! The whole company is dead!"
Vanessa gasped, clutching her chest. "What do you mean dead?! You said you were a billionaire!"
"Claire shut us down!" Ethan screamed, stepping into the living room, his hands trembling with rage. "She owns Aegis! The algorithm wasn't ours! She revoked the license key, and the ports are locked out! The board is threatening to remove me as CEO by Monday morning if I don't get her to restore the access code!"
Vanessa’s expression shifted rapidly from terror to sharp, calculating anger. "How could you be so stupid?! You were the CEO! How did you not check who owned the code before you moved me in here?!"
Ethan stared at her, stunned by the sudden venom in her voice. "What did you just say to me?"
"You told me you ran everything!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "You told me Claire was just a useless analyst sitting at home! Now you're telling me she owned the entire company all along?!"
"I built the business, Vanessa!" Ethan yelled back, taking a step toward her. "I brought in the clients! I did it for us!"
"Don't put this on me!" Vanessa spat, taking a step back and pointing an accusatory finger at his chest. "You bought me those dresses! You rented this apartment! If the company goes under, how are we going to pay the forty thousand dollars a month rent on this place?!"
Ethan let out a harsh, bitter laugh. "We? There is no 'we' when the bills come, is there Vanessa? You didn't care where the money came from when you took Claire’s diamond necklace out of her safe!"
"That necklace was mother’s!" Vanessa screamed. "She left it to the sister who actually had a life, not the workaholic robot who spent eight years slaving over spreadsheets for a husband who didn't even want her!"
Ethan slapped his hand against the marble kitchen island with a booming crack. "Shut up! Just shut up!"
He pulled his phone from his pocket, his shaking thumbs desperately scrolling through his contacts until he reached Claire’s number. He dialed.
It went straight to voicemail.
“You have reached Claire Vance. Please leave a message.”
"Claire!" Ethan shouted into the receiver, his voice cracking with humiliation and terror. "Claire, answer the phone! We need to talk! You are destroying my life! Think about the babies! If Marlowe Technologies goes under, how am I supposed to pay child support?! Call me back right now!"
He slammed the phone down on the island, breathing heavily.
Vanessa watched him from the hallway, her eyes cold, distant, and assessing. She slowly picked up her designer handbag, pulled out her personal phone, and dialed a number.

"Who are you calling?" Ethan demanded.
"A moving company," Vanessa said coldly, turning her back on him. "I’m not staying here to watch the marshals seize the furniture."
