Chapter 6 - The Long Winter

Six months passed.

Winter blanketed New York City in thick, white snow. The city lights blazed against the cold night sky, but inside Claire’s new home—a breathtaking brownstone in Greenwich Village featuring private gardens, state-of-the-art security, and a nursery that took up an entire floor—all was warm and peaceful.

Claire was now thirty-two weeks pregnant. Her triplets—three boys—were healthy, strong, and growing rapidly.

Aegis Enterprise Systems had become the fastest-growing software company in North American history. Valued at 1.2 billion dollars following a massive institutional investment led by a consortium of domestic pension funds, Claire Marlowe was officially named by Forbes as one of the youngest self-made female billionaires in the world.

She sat in her library by the roaring fireplace, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater, reviewing the architectural plans for the Vance Foundation—a fifty-million-dollar charitable initiative she had launched to fund pediatric medical research and provide housing for single mothers in New York.

Her phone chimed. It was a security alert from the front gate camera.

Claire tapped the screen, viewing the video feed.

Standing in the swirling snow outside her iron gate was Ethan Marlowe.

He was barely recognizable. He wore a threadbare winter coat that was two sizes too large, his hair was long and unkempt, and he held a crumpled envelope in his shaking, gloved hands. He was leaning against the intercom post, shivering violently in the freezing wind.

Claire watched him for a long moment. She pulled her warm shawl tighter around her shoulders, tapped the intercom button, and spoke.

"Ethan."

The speaker at the gate crackled. Ethan gasped, pressing his face close to the camera.

"Claire! Claire, please!" he sobbed, his voice trembling through the speaker. "Please press the button! Just let me stand in the foyer for five minutes! It’s freezing out here!"

"You shouldn't be here, Ethan," Claire said calmly. "The restraining order remains active."

"I don't have anywhere else to go!" Ethan wept, pressing his forehead against the cold metal of the gate. "The bank foreclosed on the apartment! My car was repossessed last week! I’m staying in a dirty residential motel in Queens! The prosecutors are filing formal tax fraud charges against me next month, Claire! I'm facing five years in federal prison!"

"You signed those fraudulent tax returns, Ethan," Claire reminded him quietly. "You took the corporate loans and used them for personal luxuries."

"I was stupid! I was influenced by Vanessa!" Ethan cried out, desperate to shift the blame to anyone else. "She manipulated me, Claire! She made me think you didn't love me! She took everything I had left and ran off to Miami with some real estate promoter! She doesn't care about me!"

"And you cared about me?" Claire asked, her tone gentle, almost curious. "When you sat across from me at the Halston Hotel while I was suffering from severe morning sickness, and handed me divorce papers offering two million dollars to walk away from my life's work?"

Ethan choked on his tears. "I made a mistake... a terrible, terrible mistake! I miss you, Claire! I think about you every single night! Please... let me come back. I'll work for Aegis! I'll be your assistant! I'll clean the offices! Just help me pay the legal fees so I don't go to prison! I'm the father of your children!"

Claire looked at her reflection in the dark window pane. She touched her swollen abdomen, feeling three distinct, powerful kicks beneath her palm—her sons, thriving, safe, and loved.

"No, Ethan," Claire said softly into the microphone. "You are not their father. A father builds a shelter for his children. You tried to demolish the roof over their heads before they were even born."

"Claire! Please! I'm begging you on my knees!" Ethan screamed, dropping to his knees in the deep snow outside the gate, clutching his hands together toward the camera lens.

"I have instructed my security detail to notify the precinct," Claire said calmly. "A squad car will be here in three minutes to escort you away. Do not come back to this house, Ethan."

"Claire! CLAIRE!"

Claire turned off the intercom screen. The hallway fell into peaceful silence. She walked over to the armchair by the fire, picked up her book, and sat down, letting the warm light illuminate the room as the siren echoes faded in the distant snowy streets.
