Chapter 13 - The Ghost of Sterling Manor

The silence in the cellar was far terrifying than the storm brewing outside. Arthur stared down at the crisp black ink in the ledger, his hands shaking so violently that the paper rustled like dry leaves in an autumn gale.

"Arthur..." Sarah’s voice was barely a whisper, laced with a terrifying blend of betrayal and agony. "What does your father have to do with this? Tell me!"

"I... I don't know, Sarah! I swear to God I didn't know!" Arthur stammered, falling back against the dirt wall of the cellar. "My father died ten years ago. I took over the practice long after... I never knew he handled corporate trusts for Sterling Enterprises!"

"He didn't just handle trusts, Arthur," Rose said quietly, standing near the wooden steps. "He signed the authorization form that allowed Dr. Chen to sign Emma’s fake death certificate. I saw his name on the hospital register twelve years ago. That was why I reached out to you when Sarah lost her original custody appeal—I wanted to see if you were as rotten as your father."

Arthur buried his face in his hands. The air in the cellar felt thick, suffocating. "All these months... I thought I was redeeming myself by helping you win Emma back. I thought I was doing justice. But my family's money... my law degree... it was all built on the blood and tears of stolen children."

Sarah looked at Arthur. She saw the genuine, unadulterated devastation written across his face. He wasn't a monster; he was a pawn who had been blind to the sins of his progenitor. She walked over to him, placing a gentle hand on his trembling shoulder.

"You aren't your father, Arthur," she said softly, though her voice still carried a tremor. "You brought Emma home to me. You fought for her when no one else would. But if we are going to survive Monday morning, you have to help me tear his legacy down."

Arthur looked up, determination blazing back into his eyes. "I will burn it to the ground. Every last brick."

The next morning broke grey and chilly. By 7:00 AM, a convoy of dark vehicles was visible down the county road, idling just past the boundaries of the farm. Victoria Sterling’s legal hounds were keeping watch, waiting like vultures for the Monday morning court deadline.

Arthur spent the entire day locked in his office, scanning the contents of the ledger and digitizing every document. What they discovered went far beyond a custody dispute. The Sterling Medical Research Initiative was a massive, illegal human experimentation syndicate funded by elite families across the state. They had been manipulating surrogate contracts, altering birth records, and separating multiple sets of twins to study the effects of environmental conditioning versus genetics.

At 3:00 PM, a black limousine pulled directly up to the front porch—ignoring the private property signs completely.

Sarah stepped out onto the porch, flanked by Arthur. Inside the house, Rose held both girls in the kitchen, keeping them far away from the front windows.

The back door of the limousine opened, and a woman stepped out. She wore a tailored ivory coat, giant dark sunglasses, and held an expensive pearl-handled walking stick. Despite her age and the ongoing federal investigations surrounding her, Victoria Sterling walked with the absolute, untouchable authority of a queen inspecting her domain.

"Sarah," Victoria said, stepping onto the bottom step of the porch. Her voice was cold, cultured, and devoid of humanity. "You look tired, dear. Country life clearly doesn't agree with your stress levels."

"Get off my porch, Victoria," Sarah said, her hands tightly clenched into fists. "You have no right to be here."

Victoria lowered her sunglasses, revealing cold, piercing blue eyes. "I have every right. I raised Emma for five years. I gave her violin lessons, private tutors, French lessons, and a life you could never dream of offering on this miserable little dirt patch. You took her from her home!"

"You bought her!" Sarah yelled, stepping down a stair. "You bought my baby like a piece of high-end furniture! You bought a stolen child from a corrupt doctor!"

"I saved her," Victoria hissed, her composure slipping for a fraction of a second, revealing the rabid madness beneath. "And I am taking her back. Your little legal defense is crumbling, Vance. You think you’re so clever, but your father was far smarter than you'll ever be. He knew where the real power resided."

"My father is dead, Victoria," Arthur said coldly, pulling a legal tablet from his briefcase. "And his non-disclosure agreements died with him. I have Dr. Chen’s complete ledger. I have the wire transfer records from Zurich. I have the names of all twelve board members of the Sterling Foundation."

Victoria’s posture stiffened slightly, her eyes narrowing. "You wouldn't dare release that. It would ruin your firm. It would ruin your father's memory."

"I don't care about my firm, and my father ruined his own memory the day he signed my daughter's life away," Arthur said with absolute venom. "We go to court tomorrow morning. And when we do, I won't just be defending Sarah’s custody. I will be filing criminal charges against you for human trafficking, falsification of medical records, and corporate espionage."

Victoria stared at Arthur for a long, terrible moment. Then, a slow, terrifying smile spread across her red lips.

"You always were a romantic, Arthur," she whispered. "Just like your father before he realized how the world truly works. Enjoy your evening with the children. Because by noon tomorrow, you won't have a roof over your heads—or a court to hear your plea."

She turned and stepped back into the limousine, leaving a chill in the spring air that made Sarah shiver to her core.
