Chapter 17 - A Mother’s Fury

Sarah didn't hesitate. Ignoring Arthur's warning hand on her shoulder, she marched down the concrete steps into the sterile, brightly lit basement complex below the greenhouse.

The room was immense, lined with floor-to-ceiling glass chambers, high-tech server racks, and rows of filing cabinets containing medical dossiers. In the center of the room sat a massive white desk, behind which stood Victoria Sterling, clad in a immaculate black suit, holding a silver revolver in her hand.

Beside Victoria stood two heavily armed private security guards, their rifles aimed directly at the stairwell.

Arthur stepped down beside Sarah, his hand near his holster, but he knew drawing his weapon against two assault rifles was suicide.

"Look at this place," Victoria said, gesturing grandly with her free hand toward the surrounding laboratory equipment. "Thirty years of cutting-edge genetic research. We were cracking the code of human destiny, Sarah! We were taking children from parents who lacked the resources to cultivate their potential, and placing them in environments of absolute perfection!"

"You're a sick, twisted monster!" Sarah spat, her eyes blazing with pure hatred. "You stole my children! You bought Emma like a pet and treated her like a science experiment!"

"I made her brilliant!" Victoria screamed, her calm facade finally shattering into unhinged rage. "She spoke three languages by age four! She played Mozart at five! And you took her back to a filthy dirt farm to paint flowers with cheap water colors!"

"She was miserable!" Sarah shouted back, stepping forward despite the guard pointing his rifle at her face. "She was terrified! She cried herself to sleep every night because she felt the hole in her heart where her sister belonged! You didn't give her perfection—you gave her a golden prison!"

Victoria’s hand trembled on the revolver. "It doesn't matter what you think, Sarah. In twenty minutes, my private jet departs from the executive runway. The servers in this room are currently undergoing a thermal wipe. In five minutes, every piece of digital evidence linking me to this initiative will be turned into melted plastic."

"Not every piece," Arthur said calmly, taking a step forward and raising his phone. "The local network in this basement is connected to the estate's high-speed satellite relay. When I walked down those stairs, my phone automatically synced with your local network."

Victoria glared at him. "What are you talking about?"

"I uploaded a worm script into your network system thirty seconds ago, Victoria," Arthur said, a cold, triumphant smile spreading across his face. "The wiping sequence didn't destroy the files. It copied them directly to the Federal Magistrate's private secure cloud server."

Victoria’s eyes widened in sheer horror. She turned to look at the main terminal behind her desk. The monitor screen was flashing bright red: EXTERNAL DATA TRANSFER COMPLETE — FEDERAL ARCHIVE INITIATED.

"You fool!" Victoria shrieked, raising her revolver toward Arthur’s head. "I will kill you both!"

BANG!

A deafening shot echoed through the concrete basement. But it wasn't Victoria’s gun that had fired.

One of the security guards staggered backward, his rifle falling from his hands as he slumped against a server rack. Behind him, standing at the emergency exit door of the basement, stood Sheriff Thomas of the Westbrook County Police Department, accompanied by four armed state troopers.

"Drop the weapon, Mrs. Sterling!" Sheriff Thomas barked, his shotgun aimed squarely at Victoria’s chest. "Hands where I can see them! NOW!"

Victoria froze, her face turning pale as snow. The second security guard immediately dropped his weapon and raised his hands into the air.

Sarah didn't wait for the officers to secure the room. She sprinted past Victoria, pulled the main storage drive from the central console, and clutched it tight against her chest—the definitive proof that would protect her daughters forever.

Victoria looked at Sarah, her voice breaking into a ragged whisper. "You... you ruined everything..."

"No," Sarah said, leaning in close to the woman who had terrorized her family for years. "I saved my daughters. And you are going to rot in a cell for the rest of your natural life."
