Chapter 14 - Whispers in the Dark

Night fell over the countryside like a shroud of iron. A thick fog rolled in from the nearby river, wrapping the farmhouse in a cold, milk-white wall that cut off all sight of the main road.
Inside, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense. Arthur had spent hours reinforcing the window locks and setting up a basic motion-sensor security system around the perimeter. He knew Victoria Sterling wouldn't wait for the court hearing. A woman with hundreds of millions of dollars at her disposal, facing imminent prison time, was a wounded animal capable of anything.
In the living room, Emma and Lily sat together on the carpet, drawing on large sheets of paper. Despite the rising danger, the children were remarkably quiet, drawing strength from each other’s presence.
Sarah sat beside them, running her fingers through Emma’s soft brown hair. "What are you drawing, sweetie?" Sarah asked, trying to keep her voice light and comforting.
Emma pointed to her drawing. It was a picture of the farmhouse, but beneath the house, she had drawn a deep subterranean cellar with red lines running through it like veins. In the middle of the cellar was a small, detailed box with a sharp star pattern carved into its lid.
"It’s the secret house under the floor," Emma said softly, her hazel eyes completely calm. "The place where the lady in the white dress used to take me when I was little."
Sarah froze. She glanced at Arthur, who was standing near the door, inspecting his handgun.
"Emma..." Sarah whispered, kneeling closer. "What lady in the white dress? What secret house?"
Emma looked at Lily, then back at her mother. "Before I lived in the big mansion with Victoria, I lived in the room with no windows. The lady in the white dress showed me pictures of Lily every day. She told me I had a twin, and that one day we would switch places."
Arthur walked over rapidly, sinking to his knees beside the girls. "Emma, did Victoria take you to that room? Where was it?"
"It was under the big flower house," Emma said simply. "Where the glass walls are. The lady had a big key with a star on it."
Arthur looked at Sarah, horror dawning on his face. "The Sterling Botanical Gardens... Victoria’s private estate in the city has a subterranean research annex underneath the glass greenhouses. That’s where they conducted the genetic testing before distributing the children!"
Before Sarah could respond, a sharp CRACK echoed through the darkness outside—the sound of the property's main electric junction box being shattered.
Instantly, all the lights in the farmhouse plunged into pitch darkness.
"Mom!" Lily screamed, clinging to Emma.
"Arthur!" Sarah gasped, blindly reaching for her daughters in the blackness.
"Stay down! Both of you, get behind the sofa!" Arthur shouted, pulling a heavy duty flashlight from his belt and flicking it on. The beam sliced through the darkness, illuminating the living room in stark, terrifying shadows.
Outside, the motion sensors didn't sound—because the power cut had rendered them useless.
Then came the sound: the slow, deliberate crunch of heavy boots marching across the gravel driveway. Multiple sets of footsteps.
"Rose, get the girls into the back panic closet now!" Arthur ordered, pulling Sarah up.
"I'm not leaving you!" Sarah cried.
"Sarah, they aren't here to negotiate!" Arthur snapped, racking the slide of his pistol. "Mercer and his mercenaries are here to clean house before the court opens tomorrow! Take the ledger and get into the closet!"
The front porch window shattered inward with a deafening crash. Heavy glass rained down on the hardwood floor. A dark figure clad in tactical gear and a balaclava kicked through the broken frame, stepping into the living room with a silenced weapon drawn.
"Clear the room!" a voice barked from the porch.
Arthur didn't hesitate. He raised his pistol and fired two quick shots into the doorframe, driving the intruder back into the shadows of the porch. "Go, Sarah! NOW!"
Sarah grabbed Lily and Emma by their arms, shoving them toward the hallway where Rose was waiting with a battery-powered lantern. "Move! Into the cellar closet!"
They sprinted down the narrow corridor, the sound of splintering wood and gunfire tearing through the peaceful sanctuary they had built over the past year. Sarah’s heart pounded in her ears like a war drum.
They reached the cellar entrance. Sarah threw open the heavy oak door and ushered her mother and daughters down the wooden steps. But as she turned to close the door behind them, a shadowy figure emerged from the kitchen corridor—moving with terrifying speed.
May you like
It was Julian Mercer. He held a high-caliber pistol, his face illuminated by the flickering red glow of an emergency exit sign.
"It’s over, Sarah," Mercer said coldly, raising the weapon. "Hand over the ledger, or your daughters won't survive the night."
