Chapter 7 - Unearthing the Conspiracy

While Sarah protected the girls in the countryside, Arthur Vance was digging deep into the financial underpinnings of Westbrook Memorial Hospital. He discovered that the year the twins were born, Mitchell Industries had made an anonymous "charity donation" of twelve million dollars to the hospital’s expansion fund.
The timing was too perfect. The donation had been cleared exactly three days after Emma’s birth certificate was registered—and subsequently altered.
Arthur managed to track down the retired hospital administrator, a man named Donald Vance (no relation to Arthur), who had fled to a retirement community in Florida shortly after the incident. Threatened with federal conspiracy charges, Donald broke his silence. He provided Arthur with an encrypted thumb drive containing the original admission records, the real birth certificates, and a recorded audio conversation between himself and Eleanor Mitchell.
On the tape, Eleanor’s voice was unmistakable: “The child is a medical liability, Donald. My son’s career cannot be overshadowed by a sickly infant. Secure the documentation. The twelve million will be transferred to your offshore account by Friday. The mother is under heavy sedation; she will believe whatever the doctors tell her.”

It was the smoking gun.
Arthur called Sarah immediately. "We have them, Sarah. This isn't just a custody dispute anymore. This is a criminal conspiracy to commit child trafficking and fraud. I’m presenting this to the District Attorney tomorrow morning."
