Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Courtyard
The temporary custody hearing was held in a private chamber, away from the prying eyes of the press. Eleanor Mitchell sat behind her son, surrounded by four top-tier corporate attorneys. She looked impeccable, radiating an aura of absolute unbothered power. Robert looked haggard, his eyes bloodshot, refusing to look at Sarah.
Judge Harrison, a stern man with a reputation for traditionalism, reviewed the petitions.
"Your Honor," Eleanor’s lead counsel, a sharp woman named Victoria Croft, stood up. "Mrs. Mitchell is suffering from a well-documented history of postpartum anxiety that has unfortunately resurfaced as a full psychological delusion. She has brought a child from a low-income demographic into a hotel room, claiming it is her biological daughter who supposedly died seven years ago. We ask for the immediate return of Lily Mitchell to her father and an order for Mrs. Mitchell to undergo mandatory psychiatric evaluation."
Arthur Vance stood up calmly. "Your Honor, we are not presenting a delusion. We are presenting a genetic miracle that was criminally concealed. We have here a certified, expedited DNA swabbing completed yesterday morning by an independent lab."
Arthur slid a document across the judge’s bench.
"The results indicate a 99.99% maternal match between Sarah Mitchell and the child known as Emma Winters. Furthermore, the DNA matches Lily Mitchell as an identical twin sister."
The courtroom went dead silent. Robert buried his face in his hands. Eleanor’s eyes narrowed, her fingers tightening around her designer handbag.
Judge Harrison stared at the document for a long, agonizing minute. He looked up, his gaze shifting from Eleanor to Sarah. "The court cannot ignore a genetic certainty of this magnitude. However, given the unusual circumstances and the allegations of historical fraud, I am ordering an immediate, independent court-appointed investigation into Westbrook Memorial Hospital’s records from seven years ago."
The judge slammed his gavel. "Until that investigation is complete, Lily Mitchell will remain in the temporary custody of her mother. Emma Winters will remain in the care of Rose Winters, under court-supervised protection. Mr. Robert Mitchell is granted supervised visitation only. This court is adjourned."

It was a temporary victory, but as Sarah walked out of the courthouse, Victoria Croft intercepted her in the hallway.
"Don't celebrate yet, Sarah," the lawyer whispered. "A DNA test doesn't prove custody suitability. By the time we dig into your past and present living conditions, the court will see that the Mitchell estate is the only place equipped to raise these girls. Enjoy your hotel room while it lasts."
