Chapter 15 - The Fractured Alliance

Sarah stood at the top of the cellar stairs, her body positioned as a physical shield between Mercer's gun and her children below. Her knuckles were white where she gripped the doorframe, but her fear had burned away, leaving behind a cold, blinding rage.
"You're too late, Mercer," Sarah said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, icy tone. "The ledger isn't here."
Mercer’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Don't play games with me, Sarah. Victoria knows Rose kept Dr. Chen’s documents. Give them to me, and I’ll ensure Emma and Lily are placed in a comfortable overseas institution. Refuse... and nobody leaves this house alive."
"I said, it's not here!" Sarah repeated. "Arthur digitized every single page two hours ago! It’s already on an encrypted server set to automatically broadcast to the Department of Justice, the FBI, and every major news network at 8:00 AM tomorrow!"
Mercer’s jaw tightened. For the first time, a flicker of genuine uncertainty passed through his cold eyes. He took a step forward, raising the gun directly at her chest. "Then I’ll just have to take you and the girls as collateral until Vance deletes the files."
"He won't delete them," a voice echoed from the darkness of the kitchen.
Mercer whirled around, but he was too late. Arthur slammed into him from the side, sending both men crashing through the dining room table. The heavy wooden table splintered in half under their weight, dishes and glass shattering everywhere.
Mercer lost his grip on his pistol, the weapon sliding across the floorboards into the pitch-black shadows.
The two men scrambled across the floor in a brutal, desperate brawl. Mercer, trained in tactical combat, landed a heavy strike to Arthur’s ribs, sending the attorney gasping for air against the wall. Mercer pulled a combat knife from his tactical vest, the steel blade catching the faint light from the lantern below.
"You should have stayed in corporate law, Vance!" Mercer growled, lunging forward with the knife aimed at Arthur’s chest.
"Arthur!" Sarah screamed.
She didn't hesitate. Sarah grabbed a heavy brass floor lamp from the corner of the room and swung it with all the strength left in her body. The heavy metal base struck Mercer squarely across the side of his head with a sickening crunch.
Mercer collapsed to the floor, stunned, his knife dropping from his fingers.
Arthur reacted instantly. He lunged forward, pressing his forearm against Mercer’s throat and pinning him to the floorboards. With his free hand, Arthur pulled a pair of heavy-duty steel handcuffs from his coat pocket—a remnant from his days as a prosecutor—and snapped them tightly around Mercer’s wrists behind his back.
Mercer gasped for breath, spitting blood onto the rug, but his eyes burned with malicious amusement. "You think... you won?" Mercer choked out, laughing weakly. "You think you’re the hero here, Vance? Tell her... tell her about the money in Zurich!"
Sarah stopped, holding the heavy brass lamp, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She looked at Arthur. "What is he talking about, Arthur?"
Arthur stayed pinned on top of Mercer, his head hanging low, his chest heaving. He couldn't look Sarah in the eye.
"Arthur... look at me!" Sarah demanded, her voice cracking. "What money in Zurich?"
"It... it was twelve years ago, Sarah," Arthur whispered, his voice broken with shame. "When my father died... I inherited his private offshore accounts. I didn't know where the money came from. I thought it was just his legal earnings. I used three million dollars from that account to start my own firm... the firm that eventually represented you."
Sarah stepped back, her mind reeling as if she had been struck. "You used the blood money from my daughter’s sale to fund your career?"
"I didn't know!" Arthur cried out, tears spilling down his cheeks as he looked up at her. "I swear to God on my life, Sarah, I didn't know until I read that ledger two hours ago! My father’s trust was named 'Vance Estate Services'—it matched the wire receipts in Chen's book! I am built on their evil, Sarah! But I am using everything I have to destroy them now!"
Mercer laughed from the floor, a dark, raspy sound. "You see, Sarah? He’s one of us. You’re trusting the son of the man who sold your baby."

Sarah looked down at Arthur. The betrayal was a fresh wound, cutting deep into her heart. But as she looked into his tear-filled eyes, she saw no malice—only the excruciating pain of a man realizing his whole life was a lie built by his father.
"We have four hours until sunrise," Sarah said softly, lowering the lamp. "We don't have time for tears, Arthur. If your father's money built this nightmare, then you are going to use every cent of it to tear Victoria Sterling's empire apart."
