Chapter 10 - The Horizon of the Free

The sunset over Dallas was a brilliant, sweeping wash of violet, gold, and deep amber.

Sofia sat on the porch swing of her father’s new ranch in the hills outside Fort Worth, a cup of hot tea between her hands. The city skyline was a distant, glittering galaxy against the dark sky, but here, the air was clean, silent, and entirely at peace.

Alexander walked out from the house, his old military field jacket replaced by a comfortable wool shirt, carrying a wooden box. He sat down on the steps beside her, opening the box to reveal a beautiful, vintage silver compass.

"Your grandfather gave me this when I deployed for the first time, Sofia," Alexander said, pressing the heavy, warm metal into her palm. "He told me that no matter how dark the night gets, and no matter how lost you feel in the storm, the needle always points toward home."

Sofia popped the latch, watching the steady needle spin before locking onto true north. She looked back at the ranch house, where her mother was currently laughing over a cookbook with Dr. Miller, the warm lights glowing from the kitchen windows like a sanctuary.

She closed the compass, her fingers wrapping tightly around the silver casing, a radiant, beautiful smile breaking across her face. The wedding dress was gone. The bruises were ancient history. And as the stars began to appear over the Texas horizon, Sofia knew that she was no longer just surviving.

She was home, she was safe, and she was completely, beautifully free
