Chapter 8 - The Rebuilding of the Sanctuary

Two months later.

The Uptown condo had been completely remodeled. The white leather furniture that Javier had sat on was gone, replaced by warm, cedarwood accents, deep velvet couches, and walls lined with photographs of Sofia's true family—her mother, her grandmother, and her father.

The divorce had been finalized in record time, with Javier signing away every legal claim to Sofia's name, assets, or future while sitting in his cell at the federal correctional facility.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the penthouse balcony was filled with the sound of laughter and the smell of a home-cooked meal. Alexander stood by the grill, a glass of bourbon in his hand, talking quietly with Marcus Vance about a new veterans' housing project they were funding together.

Elena sat on the outdoor sofa, watching Sofia show her grandmother a new series of architectural sketches for her independent design firm.

"She looks like her old self again, Elena," Alexander said, stepping up to the railing beside his former wife.

"No, Alexander," Elena smiled, her eyes reflecting the warm Dallas sunset. "She looks better than her old self. She looks like a woman who knows exactly how strong she is."

Alexander looked down at his daughter, then reached out, his large hand finding Elena’s shoulder with a quiet, genuine warmth that had been missing for a decade. "We did good, Elena. We built a wall around her."
