Chapter 4 - The Predator's Arrogance

In a luxury penthouse in downtown Dallas, Carmen Robles sat at her marble dining table, sipping espresso. Javier stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, nervously checking his phone for the twentieth time.
"She hasn't responded, Mom," Javier muttered, his hands shaking. "Her mother hasn't responded either. What if they went to the police?"
"Calm down, Javier," Carmen sneered, adjusting her gold bracelets. "Sofia is a weak, fragile little girl. I broke her spirit in less than ten minutes last night. She knows what will happen to her mother if she talks. By tomorrow morning, she will walk into the county clerk’s office, sign the final transfer deed, and save this family's name."
The doorbell rang. Javier jumped.
Carmen rolled her eyes, walking to the foyer and pulling the heavy mahogany door open. Standing there was a courier dressed in black, holding a silver legal briefcase.
"Carmen Robles?" the courier asked.
"Yes. What is this? I’m not expecting deliveries."
The courier set the briefcase on the table, opened it, and pulled out a stack of stamped, certified notices. "You have been served on behalf of Brooks Assets & Holdings. As of 9:00 AM today, all outstanding commercial loans held by Robles Enterprises have been consolidated and purchased by our client. Due to a material breach in the character clauses of your primary credit agreement, the outstanding balance of twenty-four million dollars is now called due in full. You have forty-eight hours to liquidate, or foreclosure proceedings begin immediately."

Carmen’s expensive smile froze. She snatched the papers, her eyes darting across the signature at the bottom of the page.
It didn't say Sofia Brooks. It said Colonel Alexander Brooks, USMC (Ret.).
