Chapter 1 - The Code Blue Protocol

The hospital hallway in Phoenix was long, polished, and smelled faintly of industrial antiseptic and cold lavender. I stood near a bank of vending machines, my phone pressed so tightly against my ear that my knuckles turned white.
"Phoenix Police Department, emergency dispatch," a cool, automated-sounding voice said on the line.
"I need an officer at St. Joseph’s Hospital immediately," I said, my voice crackling with a tremor I couldn't control. "I’m in the pediatric emergency department. The attending radiologist just did an ultrasound on my nine-year-old daughter. He found multiple wrapped foreign objects in her digestive tract, and he told me to call law enforcement before they take her into surgery."
The dispatcher’s tone shifted instantly from routine to razor-sharp alert. "Sir, remain where you are. I am dispatching a pediatric unit and detective team right now. Do not leave the hospital, and do not allow anyone except medical staff near your child."
I hung up, my hands trembling so violently that I nearly dropped the phone onto the linoleum floor.
When I pushed open the door back into the ultrasound room, the atmosphere had transformed. Two pediatric nurses were setting up IV lines. Lily was lying on the narrow exam table, her small knees pulled up toward her chest, her face pale under the harsh fluorescent lights.
"Daddy?" she whimpered, tears streaking through the pink warm gel still smeared across her stomach. "Is the doctor going to cut me open?"
I sat on the plastic stool beside her bed, taking her cold hands in mine and kissing her knuckles. "No, sweetie. You’re in the best place possible. The doctors are just going to help your tummy feel better."
Dr. Vance, the attending radiologist, motioned for me to step into the adjoining observation nook. He pulled down a high-resolution X-ray scan that had just been transferred from the digital suite.
"Look closely, Mr. Miller," Dr. Vance said, pointing his pen at the dark, ghostly shadows on the digital viewer.
There were seven distinct, oval-shaped capsules packed tightly within Lily’s stomach and upper small intestine. They were roughly the size of large thumbs, each sealed in a thick, uniform layer of dense material that showed up as opaque white rings under the scan.
"These aren't swallowed quarters or plastic toys," Dr. Vance said, dropping his voice to a low, grim whisper. "These are professionally wrapped transport packets. The outer layer is medical-grade latex covered in paraffin wax. One of the packets in her duodenum has already started to leak its protective seal due to her gastric acid."
My breath hitched in my throat. "Leak? Leak what?"
"We don't know the exact chemical composition yet," Dr. Vance replied, his jaw tight. "But if a single packet ruptures completely inside a nine-year-old child’s intestines, her body will absorb a lethal dose of whatever substance is inside within fifteen minutes. We’ve flagged this as a Code Blue Surgical Emergency. Dr. Aris, our chief of pediatric surgery, is scrubbing in right now for an emergency endoscopic extraction."
Before I could answer, double doors at the end of the hallway burst open.
Two uniformed Phoenix police officers walked in, followed by a tall, sharp-eyed woman in a tailored dark grey suit holding a badge lanyard.
"I’m Detective Sarah Chen, Special Victims and Child Exploitation Division," she said, her eyes sweeping over the room before settling on me. "Are you Marcus Miller?"
"I am," I said, stepping forward.
"And who had physical custody of Lily over the last seventy-two hours?" Detective Chen asked, pulling a digital recorder from her jacket pocket.
"Her mother, my ex-wife, Evelyn," I answered, my teeth gritting. "Evelyn worked a forty-eight-hour nursing shift over the weekend. Lily stayed at her house in Scottsdale with Evelyn’s new boyfriend—a guy named Marcus Vance, who goes by 'Marc'."
Detective Chen’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Marcus Vance? Does he drive a dark blue late-model Range Rover?"
May you like
"Yes," I said, my heart slamming against my ribs. "How do you know that?"
Detective Chen looked at her uniformed partner, her expression hardening into solid iron. "Officer Lopez, secure this floor. No one comes in or out of this pediatric wing without my personal sign-off. Mr. Miller... Marc Vance is currently under active investigation by the DEA and Homeland Security for international narcotics trafficking."
