Chapter 3 - The Wire and the Lie

By 1:00 PM, Lily was resting in a private, heavily guarded room on the fifth floor of the pediatric intensive care unit.

She was hooked up to an IV drip, her small abdomen bandaged under her hospital gown. She was fast asleep, her breathing slow, rhythmic, and safe. Two armed Phoenix police officers stood guard outside her door.

I sat beside her bed, holding her small, warm hand, when the door creaked open.

Evelyn rushed into the room.

She was still wearing her blue nursing scrubs, her blonde hair messy, her eyes wide with frantic, performative panic. She looked around at the monitors, then looked at me.

"Marcus!" she cried out, reaching toward Lily. "Oh my god! The police called my station! They said Lily had emergency surgery! What happened?! Did she swallow a toy?!"

I stood up slowly from my chair. I didn't yell. I didn't curse. I simply stood between my ex-wife and my daughter's bed like a stone wall.

"Don't touch her, Evelyn," I said, my voice dead and cold.

Evelyn blinked, taking a step back, her hands hovering in the air. "What are you talking about?! I'm her mother! What is wrong with you?!"

Detective Chen stepped out from behind the privacy curtain, closing her notepad with a soft snap.

"Mrs. Miller," Chen said, her tone smooth and lethal. "Where is Marc Vance right now?"

Evelyn’s eyes flickered nervously. She adjusted the strap of her leather purse. "Marc? He’s... he’s at his office in Paradise Valley. He had a meeting with some investors today. What does Marc have to do with Lily's stomach bug?"

"It wasn't a stomach bug, Evelyn," I said, pulling up the digital photo Dr. Aris had taken of the seven biohazard packets on my phone and thrusting it in front of her face. "Marc fed our nine-year-old daughter seven packets of pure fentanyl while you were working your shift."

Evelyn stared at the image. The color drained from her face so fast she stumbled backward against the wall, clutching her chest.

"No..." she stammered, her voice high and breathless. "No, that’s... that’s impossible. Marc loves Lily! He bought her a puppy last month! He took us to Hawaii!"

"He bought you those things with money made from poisoning kids, Evelyn!" I stepped closer, my voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Did you leave Lily alone with him all weekend?"

Evelyn swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward the door as if looking for an escape route. "I... I worked a twelve-hour shift on Friday night, and a twelve-hour shift on Saturday..."

"Did Marc feed her breakfast on Saturday morning?" Detective Chen asked, leaning against the bed rail.

"Yes," Evelyn whispered, tears finally streaming down her cheeks. "He... he made her chocolate protein smoothies. He told me he was teaching her how to be healthy... he said she loved the 'magic gummy vitamins' he put in her blender..."

Gummy vitamins.

My stomach twisted into a violent knot. Vance hadn't forced Lily to swallow rubber packets under threat of violence. He had coated the latex packets in flavored gelatin, disguised them as candies or health supplements, and had her wash them down with thick protein shakes so she wouldn't feel the bulk as they slid down her throat.

"Mrs. Miller," Detective Chen said, stepping directly into Evelyn’s line of sight. "Right now, Marc Vance believes Lily is still at your house complaining of a stomach ache. He doesn't know she’s in the hospital, and he doesn't know we retrieved the narcotics."

Evelyn looked up, trembling violently. "What... what are you saying?"

"I’m saying that in ten minutes, you are going to pick up your phone, call Marc Vance, and tell him that Lily’s stomach pain has passed," Chen commanded. "You are going to ask him to come over to your house to pick up her bags for the Denver trip. And if you give him a single hint, signal, or warning... I will personally see to it that you are indicted as a co-conspirator in federal drug trafficking and attempted child endangerment."

May you like

Evelyn looked at me, her eyes pleading for help.

I stared back at her with complete, unyielding stone. "Make the call, Evelyn. Or I swear to God you will never see Lily again."
