Chapter 10 - The Mountain Sunshine

On Lily’s tenth birthday in June, the sky above Flagstaff was a brilliant, cloudless canopy of sapphire blue.
We held a small birthday celebration in our backyard under the shade of a massive Ponderosa pine tree. Aunt Sarah had flown in again, and Detective Chen was there, along with three of Lily’s new best friends from her school art club.
A large, two-tier chocolate cake sat on the wooden picnic table, decorated with bright yellow icing and ten glowing candles.
Lily stood at the head of the table wearing a crown of woven wildflowers her friends had made for her. Her face was flushed with health, her eyes sparkling with pure, unburdened joy.
"Make a wish, Lily!" Aunt Sarah cheered, clapping her hands.
Lily looked around the table—at Aunt Sarah, at Detective Chen, at her friends, and finally at me.
She didn't hesitate. She took a deep breath and blew out all ten candles in a single, powerful burst.
Everyone cheered, clapping and reaching for slices of cake.
As her friends ran off toward the wooden tire swing near the trees, Lily walked over to where I was standing by the porch steps. She wrapped her small arms around my waist, leaning her head against my chest.
"Daddy?" she whispered softly.
"Yes, sweetie?" I asked, bending down to kiss the top of her head.
"My tummy doesn't hurt anymore," she said, looking up at me with bright, happy eyes. "Not even a little bit."
I pulled her tight into my arms, holding her close against my heart, feeling the warm mountain breeze drift through the pine trees around us.

"I know, baby," I whispered back, my voice thick with happy tears. "It’s never going to hurt again."
Under the bright mountain sun, surrounded by love, safety, and a future that belonged entirely to us, we took a deep breath together—and stepped into the warmth of our new life.
