Chapter 8 - The Verdict and The Termination

Three weeks later, on a crisp December morning, the hammer of justice fell with absolute, unyielding finality.
In Federal District Court, Judge Garcia delivered the sentence for Marc Vance:
Two life sentences without the possibility of parole, to be served consecutively at the ADX Florence Federal Supermax Penitentiary in Colorado, plus thirty years for federal firearm and child exploitation charges.
Vance was led out of the courtroom in heavy chains, never to see the light of day as a free man again.
Immediately following the federal sentencing, we moved to the Maricopa County Family Court for the final disposition of parental rights regarding Evelyn Miller.
In a quiet, private family courtroom, Judge Helena Gomez presided over the bench.
Evelyn sat at her table, her hands trembling as her attorney presented a desperate plea for supervised visitation after she completed her upcoming five-year prison sentence for money laundering.
Judge Gomez reviewed the criminal trial transcripts, the medical reports from Dr. Aris, and the psychological evaluation of Lily.
Then, she looked down at Evelyn with deep, stern condemnation.
"Mrs. Miller," Judge Gomez said, her voice echoing through the quiet room. "A parent’s primary, sacred duty is the protection of their child. You allowed a dangerous criminal into your home, accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal proceeds to fund a luxury lifestyle, and turned a blind eye while your nine-year-old daughter was subjected to severe physical trauma and near-fatal poisoning."
Evelyn sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "I didn't know... I swear I didn't know..."
"Ignorance born of greed is not a defense, Mrs. Miller," Judge Gomez declared, raising her gavel. "Effective immediately, the parental rights of Evelyn Miller over the minor child, Lily Miller, are permanently terminated. All birth certificates will be amended, and a permanent, lifetime order of protection is issued prohibiting any contact, direct or indirect, between the defendant and the child."
BANG!
The gavel struck the wooden block.

I closed my eyes, a massive, crushing weightlifting off my chest that had been pressing down on me for four long months.
It was over. The legal battles, the cartel shadows, and the fear had finally come to an absolute end.
