Chapter 4 - The Sting at Paradise Valley

At 3:30 PM, I sat in the back of a blacked-out surveillance van parked two houses down from Evelyn’s suburban home in Paradise Valley.
I wore an audio headset linked directly to the wiretap operating inside the house. Detective Chen sat beside me, surrounded by four tactical operators from the Phoenix SWAT team adjusting their body armor and checking their sidearms.
Through the surveillance feed on the high-definition monitor, we watched Evelyn sitting at her kitchen island. Her hands were shaking so hard she had to rest her coffee cup on the granite counter to avoid spilling it.
"Keep it steady, Evelyn," Chen said into her comms mic. "He’s pulling onto the street now."
On the external camera feed, a dark blue Range Rover glided silently down the quiet suburban cul-de-sac and pulled into Evelyn’s driveway.
Marc Vance stepped out of the vehicle.
He was wearing gray tailored trousers, a white linen shirt, and aviator sunglasses. He looked completely relaxed, holding a small box of gourmet pastries from a local bakery in one hand.
He unlocked the front door and walked inside.
"Hey, babe," Vance’s smooth voice echoed through my headset. "How’s our little princess feeling? Is her tummy still upset?"
In the kitchen, Evelyn swallowed hard, forcing a tight, nervous smile. "She’s... she’s resting upstairs, Marc. She ate some soup."
Vance set the pastry box on the counter, reaching out to wrap his arms around Evelyn’s waist. "Good. The Denver flight leaves at seven tonight. The private hangar is set. I’ll go upstairs, wake her up, and get her loaded into the Rover."
"Marc..." Evelyn’s voice quavered. "Are you... are you sure she should travel? She was in so much pain this morning..."
Vance’s posture changed instantly.
He didn't yell. He simply released her waist, pulled off his aviator sunglasses, and looked down at her with a cold, predatory stare that made my blood run cold.
"Evelyn," Vance said, his tone dangerously soft. "We talked about this. The client in Denver is waiting. Lily is coming with me. Do not make this complicated."
"What did you give her, Marc?" Evelyn burst out, breaking protocol despite Chen’s explicit warnings. "What did you put in her smoothie on Saturday?!"
Vance froze. His eyes narrowed, darting instantly around the kitchen, assessing the room with the practiced instinct of a hunted predator.
"What are you talking about?" he asked coldly.
"The hospital!" Evelyn screamed, tears pouring down her face. "She had surgery, Marc! They pulled seven packets of fentanyl out of her body!"
Vance didn't hesitate for a single microsecond.
He reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a compact black semi-automatic pistol, and racked the slide.
"SWAT! GO, GO, GO!" Chen roared into her microphone.
The rear doors of our surveillance van flew open. Four SWAT operators burst onto the pavement like a tidal wave, rushing the front porch with heavy boots.
FLASH-BANG!
A blinding explosion of light and thunder shattered the front windows of Evelyn’s house.
The front door was blown off its hinges by a breaching charge. SWAT officers flooded the foyer, laser sights painting the living room walls in vivid red dots.
"POLICE! DOWN ON THE GROUND! DROP THE WEAPON! DOWN ON THE GROUND!"
Through the internal monitor, I watched Vance attempt to sprint toward the back patio door. A SWAT operator tackled him mid-stride, slamming him face-first into the hardwood floor. The pistol skittered across the tile, bouncing against the refrigerator.
Vance struggled violently, screaming curses, but three officers pinned his limbs, pulling his arms behind his back and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists.
Detective Chen stepped into the house, her boots stepping over the shattered glass of the front door. She looked down at Vance, who was bleeding from a cut above his eyebrow, his pristine shirt torn and covered in dust.
"Marc Vance," Chen said, pulling out her badge. "You are under arrest for federal narcotics trafficking, conspiracy, illegal firearm possession, and attempted murder of a minor."
May you like
Vance spat blood onto the floor, glaring up at her with pure malice. "You have nothing on me. I didn't feed that kid anything. You can't prove a damn thing in court."
Chen leaned down, her face inches from his. "We don't need to prove what she ate, Marc. We retrieved the latex packets from her intestines with your thumbprints sealed inside the wax layers. You’re going away for the rest of your life."
