Chapter 5 - The Financial Trail

Two days later, Lily was moved from the intensive care unit to a standard pediatric recovery room.
The color had returned to her cheeks, and she was sitting up in bed eating a bowl of vanilla ice cream while watching cartoons on the wall-mounted television.
I sat beside her, brushing her soft hair away from her forehead, when Detective Chen and a man in a sharp charcoal suit holding a thick leather briefcase walked into the room.
"Marcus," Chen said, nodding to me. "This is Special Agent David Miller from the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and Homeland Security."
I stood up, shaking Agent Miller’s hand. "Did you find out how deep this goes?"
"Mr. Miller," Agent Miller said, pulling out a tablet and tapping the screen. "Over the last forty-eight hours, federal agents executed search warrants on four properties owned by Marc Vance across Arizona and Nevada."
He showed me high-resolution photographs of a suburban warehouse near the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.
Inside the warehouse were commercial pill presses, hydraulic packaging machines, and dozens of industrial vats containing chemical precursors.
"Vance wasn't just a courier," Agent Miller explained. "He was running a major regional processing hub. But what we found in his private financial records is what brings us to your ex-wife."
I looked toward the hospital window, my chest tightening. "Evelyn?"
"We audited Evelyn Miller’s bank accounts this morning," Agent Miller revealed. "Over the last five months, Vance transferred over $140,000 into a offshore account registered under Evelyn’s name in the Cayman Islands."
I stared at him in utter disbelief. "She knew? She knew what he was doing?"
"She didn't know the exact details of the fentanyl operation," Agent Miller clarified. "She believed Vance was laundering money for offshore real estate investors. She agreed to allow Vance to use her suburban house as a 'safe drop' for cash packages in exchange for monthly payments that covered her mortgage, her luxury lease, and her personal debts."
"She put our daughter in the same house as a cartel processing operation for seventy-five thousand dollars a month?" my voice trembled with rising fury.
"Evelyn was arrested two hours ago at her attorney's office," Detective Chen added quietly. "She has been charged with felony child endangerment, financial money laundering, and obstruction of justice. Her bail has been set at two million dollars."
I turned back to look at Lily, who was giggling at a cartoon character on the screen, completely oblivious to the financial and criminal empire that had almost destroyed her life.

"I want her parental rights terminated," I said, my voice cold, absolute, and steel-hard. "I want Evelyn completely removed from Lily’s life. Permanently."
"Our legal team is already preparing the emergency family court petition, Mr. Miller," Chen assured me. "With the criminal charges pending, no judge in Arizona will ever allow Evelyn near this child again."
