Chapter 1 - The Cold Counterstrike

The quiet room felt heavier than the cast-iron pot lying near the headboard. Glenda stood with her arms crossed, a smug, self-righteous smirk planted on her face. She truly believed that Demi, like so many times before, would swallow her tears, clean up the mess, and accept her fate. After all, in Glenda’s mind, men were entitled to their indiscretions, and wives were meant to endure them silently.

Demi did not shed a single tear. Her years as an emergency medical technician had trained her mind to switch instantly into crisis mode when chaos erupted. Panic was a luxury she refused to grant herself. Instead, a icy clarity settled over her. She looked at the photograph of her husband, Philip, holding another woman in the very apron her grandmother had sewn for her. Then she looked at Glenda.

"You knew," Demi said, her voice devoid of anger, flat and absolute.

"Of course I knew," Glenda snorted, walking toward the kitchen to pour herself a cup of coffee. "Philip is a young, attractive man with needs. You’re always working late at that clinic, smelling like antiseptic and carrying the weight of the world. Chloe gives him what you don’t. Respect, warmth, and a real home. If you were half the wife she is, he wouldn’t have needed to drive all the way to Lake Placid every weekend."

Demi didn't answer. She walked past Glenda into the bedroom, picked up the heavy green folder from her desk, and slid the photographs inside. She grabbed her designer trench coat, her purse, and her car keys.

"Where do you think you’re going?" Glenda shouted from the kitchen. "Philip will be back in two hours! You need to scrub the floor where that pot chipped the wood, and you haven't made dinner!"

Demi stopped at the doorway, turning her head slightly. "The apartment is mine, Glenda. Enjoy the silence while it lasts."

"Yours?" Glenda laughed mockingly. "Philip's name is on the deed! My son built this life! You’re just a glorified nurse who got lucky!"

Demi pulled the heavy oak door shut behind her, the lock clicking into place with a sharp, final sound. She took the elevator down to the garage, stepped into her sedan, and dialed Paige immediately.

Paige answered on the second ring. "Demi? I just saw your text. What happened? Are you okay?"

"I’m alive, Paige, and I’m completely clear-headed," Demi said, placing the phone on speaker as she started the engine. "I have proof of Philip’s infidelity at the Lake Placid property. I also have Glenda on record committing physical assault with a weapon—she threw a five-pound cast-iron skillet at my head this morning. But more importantly, I’m ready to execute the clause in our financial agreement."

There was a brief pause on the line as Paige processed the information. "The postnuptial rider we drafted two years ago? The one Philip signed when he begged you for $145,000 from your grandmother’s inheritance to clear his personal debts?"

"Precisely that one," Demi said, merging into the afternoon traffic toward downtown Rochester. "He signed an agreement stating that if the marriage dissolved due to proven marital misconduct or infidelity on his part, his name would be automatically removed from the title of the Rochester apartment, and he would forfeit his equity in the Lake Placid house to repay the balance of the loan with interest."

"Demi..." Paige sounded both impressed and fiercely protective. "Philip thought that contract was just a piece of paper to calm you down when he burned through your savings. He never believed you’d actually enforce it, let alone have ironclad evidence of an affair."

"He underestimated me," Demi said coolly. "He assumed because I chose peace, I was weak. I want you to file the divorce petition today. I want emergency eviction notices served for both the Rochester apartment and the Lake Placid house. And Paige? Draft a formal police report regarding Glenda's assault. I want a temporary restraining order issued by nightfall."

"Consider it done," Paige said. "Come to my office right now. We’ll sign the affidavits and get the process servers moving. By the time Philip steps foot back into Rochester, his entire world is going to implode."

Demi hung up and pulled out onto the highway. For the first time in two years, the suffocating chest tightness she had carried was completely gone. She glanced at her reflection in the rearview mirror. The woman looking back wasn't a victim; she was a survivor taking back her life.
