Chapter 6 - The Day in Court

The trial for financial fraud, grand larceny, and felony assault convened six months later at the Monroe County Courthouse. The courtroom was packed with local press, clinic staff who had come to support Demi, and curious onlookers who had followed the scandal that had rocked Rochester’s upper-middle-class social circles.

Philip sat at the defense table next to his court-appointed attorney, looking thoroughly broken. Beside him sat Glenda, dressed in a muted brown suit, her former arrogance entirely replaced by a nervous tremor. Her hair was unstyled, and she stared fixedly at the floor, unable to meet the glare of the jury.

Demi sat on the prosecution's side next to Paige, wearing a sharp navy blue pantsuit. Her hair was pulled back elegantly, and her face showed absolute calm. Sitting in the row directly behind her was Julian, offering a quiet, steady presence that grounded her throughout the proceedings.

The Assistant District Attorney, a sharp woman named Karen Mercer, stood up to deliver her opening remarks.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the jury," Mercer began, walking slowly along the jury box. "This case is not merely about a failed marriage. It is about calculated, systematic financial exploitation and violent physical intimidation. Over the course of two years, the defendants, Philip Vance and Glenda Vance, engaged in a scheme to defraud the victim, Demi Vance, of over two hundred thousand dollars."

Mercer pointed dramatically toward Philip. "While Demi Vance was working extended shifts at a public health clinic, saving lives and providing the primary financial foundation for her household, Philip Vance was funneling her grandmother’s inheritance into a hidden shell company. He used those funds to maintain a secret mistress in luxury, buy sports cars, and finance lavish trips, all while his mother, Glenda Vance, acted as the accomplice and manager of those stolen funds."

Mercer turned her attention to Glenda. "And when the victim began to uncover the truth, Glenda Vance did not offer remorse. She reacted with violence, hurling a deadly iron weapon at the victim's head while demanding she continue to act as a servant. Today, we will present bank statements, recorded admissions, forensic audits, and photographic evidence that leave no room for doubt."

For three days, the evidence was presented meticulously. Marcus Brody took the stand, laying out the undeniable trail of money moving from Demi’s inheritance account directly into Glenda’s shell company and out to Chloe’s expenses.

Then came Raven, the neighbor from Lake Placid, who testified with sharp judicial precision about seeing Philip bring his mistress to the property week after week while Demi was working night shifts.

Finally, Demi took the stand.

Her testimony was quiet, clear, and utterly devastating. She recounted the years of emotional manipulation, the endless demands, the financial sacrifices she had made, and finally, the morning of her thirty-second birthday.

"When that pot hit the headboard," Demi testified, looking directly at the jury, "I realized that I had spent years trying to save a marriage with people who viewed my kindness as weakness and my love as something to be exploited. I decided in that moment that I would no longer be a victim of their greed."

The defense attorney’s cross-examination was brief and completely ineffective. He tried to suggest that Demi had willingly transferred the funds as gifts to her mother-in-law, but Paige’s ironclad postnuptial agreement and the signed loan acknowledgment rendered his arguments useless.

After less than two hours of deliberation, the jury returned to the courtroom.

"On the count of Grand Larceny in the Second Degree," the jury foreman read, "we find the defendant, Philip Vance, GUILTY."

"On the count of Wire Fraud, GUILTY."

"On the count of Felony Domestic Assault," the foreman continued, looking at Glenda, "we find the defendant, Glenda Vance, GUILTY."

Glenda let out a sharp gasp and collapsed backward into her chair, sobbing hysterically. Philip lowered his head onto his arms on the wooden table, weeping uncontrollably as the judge knocked his gavel on the wooden block.

"The defendants will be remanded into custody immediately pending sentencing," the judge announced sternly. "Bail is revoked."

As the court officers stepped forward with handcuffs, Philip looked up desperately across the room at Demi. His eyes begged for mercy, for a sign of forgiveness, for anything.

Demi stood up slowly, picked up her briefcase, and turned her back on him completely.
