Chapter 10 - A New Dawn

On her thirty-fifth birthday, three years to the day after a cast-iron pot had slammed into her headboard, Demi stood in front of a full-length mirror in the master bedroom of the Lake Placid estate.

She wore an elegant, flowing white lace gown with a simple veil resting in her dark hair. The room around her was flooded with warm morning sunlight. Outside the window, the lake sparkled like diamonds under a crisp, clear sky, and the sound of laughter and acoustic guitar music drifted up from the lawn below.

There was a soft knock at the door. Julian stepped inside, looking striking in a tailored navy tuxedo. According to tradition, he wasn't supposed to see her before the ceremony, but neither of them cared much for rigid rules that didn't bring joy.

He stopped in his tracks, his breath catching in his throat as he looked at her.

"You are breathtaking, Demi," he said softly, walking toward her and taking both her hands in his.

"I was just thinking," Demi said, looking at her reflection beside his in the mirror. "Three years ago today, I thought my life was over. I thought I was trapped in a nightmare."

"And now?" Julian asked, kissing the top of her head gently.

"Now I know that morning wasn't the end of my life," Demi said, turning to look into his dark blue eyes. "It was the day I stopped letting toxic people run my story. It was the day I chose myself."

Down on the lakeside lawn, fifty of their closest friends, colleagues, and loved ones were gathered. Paige stood near the floral arch woven with white roses and eucalyptus, smiling broadly as the music changed to signal the start of the processional.

Demi walked down the aisle on her own two feet, stepping firmly onto the green grass. She didn't need anyone to "give her away." She belonged to herself, fully and completely, and she was freely choosing to share her life with a man who cherished her.

Julian met her at the altar, holding her hands tightly as they exchanged vows they had written themselves—vows built on mutual respect, unwavering loyalty, shared purpose, and deep, enduring love.

"By the power vested in me," the officiant announced, "I now pronounce you husband and wife!"

The crowd erupted into joyful applause as Julian pulled Demi close, kissing her deeply under the warm mountain sun.

Later that evening, as the stars filled the Adirondack sky, a magnificent three-tiered cake was brought out to the main patio. The crowd gathered around, raising their glasses in a toast.

"To Demi!" Paige shouted, raising her champagne glass high. "To the strongest woman we know, who turned a moment of betrayal into a legacy of triumph and true happiness!"

"To Demi!" the crowd echoed, their voices ringing out over the quiet lake.

Demi leaned against Julian’s chest, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart behind her back. She looked up at the stars, feeling an overwhelming sense of gratitude, peace, and absolute freedom.

She had survived the storm, stripped away the lies, reclaimed her power, and built a sanctuary of true love on the very ground where her past had tried to destroy her. The future was wide open, bright, and entirely hers.
