Chapter 9 - The Echoes of the Past
Two years after the trial, Demi’s life had achieved a level of harmony and success she had once thought impossible.
She had been promoted to Director of Clinical Operations at the health network, overseeing six regional clinics and implementing revolutionary emergency response protocols that saved countless lives. Her work was celebrated statewide, and she was frequently invited to speak at medical conferences.
One afternoon, while working in her corner office downtown, Paige dropped by for an unexpected visit. She carried a legal folder under her arm.
"Got a brief update from the state corrections department," Paige said, taking a seat across from Demi. "Thought you might want to know."
Demi leaned back in her chair, holding a pen. "Is it Philip?"
"Yes," Paige said. "His second request for early parole was denied yesterday. The panel cited his lack of accountability and his failure to make significant progress on his restitution court order. He’s serving the full eight years."
"And Glenda?"
"She finished her eighteen-month sentence last year," Paige explained. "She’s living in a small studio apartment in Syracuse, working part-time checking coats at a local theater. She tried to reach out to several of her old friends from Rochester, but no one will take her calls. She’s completely isolated."
Demi listened to the updates with a quiet sense of closure. She felt no malice, no desire for further vengeance, and no lingering pain. They were simply people who had reaped the exact harvest they had sown.
"What about Chloe?" Demi asked out of mild curiosity.
"Chloe declared bankruptcy last spring after her lease on the luxury car was repossessed," Paige chuckled. "Last I heard, she moved back to her parents' house in Ohio."
Demi closed the file on her desk. "Thank you for telling me, Paige. But honestly? They belong to a life that feels like it happened to someone else. My real life is happening right now."

Paige smiled warmly. "I know it is. And that brings me to my real reason for dropping by today. Are the final wedding preparations for next month all set?"
Demi broke into a radiant smile, her face lighting up with genuine joy. "Everything is set. The flowers arrive on Friday, the caterers are ready, and the Lake Placid house is waiting."
