Chapter 3 - The Unraveling Lie

While Philip and Glenda were hastily shoving their clothes into garbage bags under the watchful eyes of the police, Demi was sitting in a high-rise office downtown, sipping chamomile tea. Across the polished mahogany desk sat Paige, along with Marcus Brody, a top-tier forensic accountant Paige had retained for the case.
"The picture is far worse than we initially anticipated, Demi," Marcus said, laying out a series of financial spreadsheets. "Philip wasn't just using your inheritance to pay off old debts. He has been systematically siphoning funds from your joint household management account for the past eighteen months."
Demi leaned forward, her eyes narrowing. "Where was the money going?"
"To a shell company registered under his mother’s name, Glenda Vance Enterprises," Marcus revealed. "From that account, regular monthly payments were made to cover the rent of a luxury apartment in downtown Buffalo, as well as high-end clothing subscriptions, lease payments for a luxury vehicle, and expensive jewelry stores. Chloe isn't just a casual affair, Demi. Philip has been maintaining an entire second lifestyle for her using your money."
Demi felt a cold anger settle deep in her core. She hadn't just been betrayed emotionally; she had been systematically robbed while working sixty-hour weeks at the clinic, coming home to a mother-in-law who treated her like a servant.
"How much total?" Demi asked calmly.
"Directly stolen from your inheritance and diverted joint funds? Approximately $210,000," Marcus replied. "Because he used fraud and misrepresentation to transfer those funds into his mother's shell company, this steps outside civil divorce court. This is grand larceny and wire fraud."
Paige leaned back in her chair, a grim smile playing on her lips. "Philip thought he was playing a high-stakes game where he got to keep the dutiful wife's money while enjoying the mistress's affection. He didn't count on us auditing his tracks."
"What are our next steps?" Demi inquired.
"First, we freeze every single account associated with Glenda Enterprises and Philip's personal assets," Paige explained. "Second, we notify the prosecutor's office regarding the financial fraud. Third, we hit the Lake Placid property. Since the postnuptial agreement assigns full equity of Lake Placid to you upon proof of infidelity, we are filing an emergency order to take possession of the cabin immediately. Chloe is currently staying there under the impression that Philip owns the estate outright."
Demi stood up, adjusting her jacket. "Then let's go to Lake Placid."
"You want to go there yourself?" Paige asked, surprised.
"I spent my money buying that house," Demi said firmly. "I spent my weekends restoring the woodwork and planting the garden. I'm not going to let a squatter and my treacherous husband treat it like their personal resort for another single day. I want to be there when the locks are changed."
Two hours later, Philip was sitting in the lobby of a budget motel on the outskirts of Rochester, his mother crying hysterically beside him surrounded by trash bags full of clothes. His phone rang. It was Chloe.
"Philip, darling! Where are you?" Chloe’s sweet, high-pitched voice came through the speaker. "You said you'd be back at the cabin by six! I made reservations at the steakhouse!"
"Chloe... we have a problem," Philip stammered, rubbing his throbbing forehead. "Demi found out."
"What do you mean she found out?" Chloe’s tone instantly sharpened, dropping the sweet act. "Philip, you told me she was a pushover! You said she’d give you a quiet divorce and let you keep the cabin and the allowance!"
"She took the apartment, Chloe!" Philip cried out, desperate. "She had a postnup! The police threw me and my mother out! She knows about the money!"
"What about the Lake Placid house?!" Chloe snapped. "This house is in your name, right? Tell me it's in your name!"
"It... it was," Philip stuttered. "But the postnup..."
Before Philip could finish his sentence, the sound of loud knocking resonated through Chloe’s end of the phone, followed by the deep voice of a local sheriff.

"Chloe Miller? This is the Essex County Sheriff's Office. We have an emergency court order for the immediate vacation of these premises."
Philip heard Chloe scream in outrage before the call went dead.
