Chapter 7 - The Final Accounting

Sentencing took place one month later. The judge showed no leniency toward either defendant, citing the prolonged, calculated nature of their crimes and the total lack of remorse displayed prior to their conviction.

Philip Vance was sentenced to four to twelve years in state prison for grand larceny and fraud, with mandatory full restitution of $210,000 ordered to be paid back to Demi from any future earnings, assets, or liquidations.

Glenda Vance was sentenced to eighteen months in county jail for felony assault and civil complicity in fraud, along with three years of probation and a permanent protective order prohibiting her from ever coming within 1,000 feet of Demi.

With the criminal trial concluded, the final civil settlement proceeded smoothly. The Rochester apartment was awarded solely to Demi, free and clear of any encumbrances. The Lake Placid house was officially placed entirely in her name, with the court forcing the sale of Philip’s remaining vehicle assets to pay off the remaining mortgage balance.

Demi had won complete, undeniable victory.

On a bright autumn morning, Demi stood in the middle of her Rochester apartment. A team of movers was carefully removing the last remaining pieces of furniture that Philip and Glenda had chosen. She had decided to sell the apartment; it carried memories of a past life she no longer needed or wanted.

Paige walked in carrying a bottle of vintage champagne and two glasses.

"The closing documents for the sale of this apartment came through," Paige said, popping the cork with a satisfying pop. "You made a $180,000 profit over the purchase price. Combined with the full recovery of your grandmother's inheritance from the asset forfeiture fund, your financial state is stronger than it has ever been."

Demi took a glass of champagne, smiling softly. "It was never really about the money, Paige. It was about taking back my dignity."

"Well, you took back your dignity, your wealth, and your freedom," Paige said, clinking her glass against Demi's. "What are you going to do with the Lake Placid house?"

"I’m keeping it," Demi said without hesitation. "I'm renovating it completely. I'm taking down the old deck, repainting every room, and turning it into a peaceful retreat. A place where real love and real family can gather."

"And speaking of real love..." Paige raised an eyebrow slyly. "How are things with Dr. Julian Vance?"

Demi felt a soft warmth flush her cheeks. Over the past six months, Julian had been an unwavering rock in her life. What had started as professional courtesy had grown into late-night dinners, long walks through the Rochester parks, and deep, meaningful conversations about their shared passion for medicine, travel, and building a life of purpose.

"He’s wonderful," Demi admitted honestly. "He doesn't ask me to prove my worth. He just sees me."

"That's because you’re extraordinary, Demi," Paige said gently. "Philip was a parasite who tried to dim your light so he wouldn't look so small. Now you get to shine as bright as you want."
