Chapter 2 - The Cover-Up and the Call

The agony was absolute. Clara lay twisted on the cold marble, a deep, tearing sensation in her lower stomach signaling that something was catastrophically wrong. She gasped for air, her fingers scratching weakly at the polished stone.
"The baby..." she choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "Eleanor... call 911..."
Eleanor stood over her, completely unmoved by the human suffering at her feet. Her analytical mind was already spinning, calculating the optics, the fallout, and the narrative. If the staff or the public found out she had physically confronted her pregnant daughter-in-law before a near-fatal fall, the Sterling reputation would be dragged through the mud.
"Calm yourself, Clara. You are hysterical," Eleanor said coldly, her voice devoid of any maternal instinct or basic human empathy.
She walked calmly over to the landline telephone in the hallway, deliberately bypassing the emergency services speed dial. Instead, she dialed the private number of Dr. Harrison, the Sterling family’s heavily compensated concierge physician.
"Harrison," Eleanor spoke into the receiver, her voice steady and demanding. "Get an ambulance dispatched to the estate immediately. Clara has had a clumsy fall down the stairs. Make sure it is a private transport, no sirens. We do not need the media sniffing around our gates. And coordinate with St. Jude’s VIP wing. Clear the floor."
As Eleanor spoke, a dark, terrifying pool of fluid and crimson blood began to seep from beneath Clara’s maternity dress, staining the pristine white marble.
Clara’s vision began to blur. Through the haze of pain, she heard the heavy front door open. The estate’s head housekeeper, Maria, stepped inside holding a basket of fresh linens. Seeing Clara bleeding on the floor, Maria dropped the basket and let out a horrified shriek.
"Oh my God! Miss Clara!" Maria rushed forward, dropping to her knees and cradling Clara’s head. "Madam, what happened?! We must call an ambulance!"

"I have already taken care of it, Maria," Eleanor snapped, stepping between the housekeeper and Clara, her shadow looming large. "Clara became dizzy and lost her footing. It was a tragic, clumsy accident. You would do well to remember that exact phrasing when anyone asks. My son is fragile right now, and we wouldn't want him getting the wrong impression about how careless his wife was being."
Clara wanted to scream the truth, to yell that Eleanor had cornered her, gripped her, and caused the fall. But the suffocating darkness finally closed in, swallowing her whole into unconsciousness.
