Chapter 4 - The Quiet Man's Rage

Twenty miles away, in a sleek, high-tech corporate office in the city’s financial district, Caleb Sterling was finishing his meeting when his personal cell phone buzzed. It was a restricted number.

He answered it. "Caleb speaking."

"Mr. Sterling, this is Maria," the housekeeper’s voice came through the line, muffled and trembling with terror. She was hiding in the estate’s pantry, crying. "You must go to St. Jude’s Hospital immediately. It's Miss Clara. She... she fell down the stairs. There was so much blood, Mr. Caleb. Your mother... she told me to say it was an accident, but I saw them arguing before the fall. Your mother was gripping her arm. Please, you must save her."

The phone went dead.

Caleb froze. The gentle, accommodating smile that he always wore to keep the peace in his family instantly vanished. His face went entirely blank, his eyes darkening into pools of freezing, dangerous intensity. For years, Caleb had played the role of the quiet, submissive son. He had let his mother think she controlled him, let her believe he was weak, all to keep her venom directed away from his wife.

But Eleanor had just crossed a line from which there was no return.

Caleb picked up his desk phone and dialed a number that he had never used in front of his mother. It was a direct line to General Vance, the regional commander of the state police and a man who owed Caleb’s private security firm everything.

"General, this is Caleb Sterling," Caleb said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion, sharp as a scalpel. "My wife has just been assaulted and forced into a medical crisis at my mother's estate. She is currently at St. Jude’s Hospital under the 'supervision' of a corrupt doctor named Harrison. I need a full forensic team sent to my house to secure the foyer, and I need an immediate lockdown on the seventh floor of St. Jude's. No one leaves. No records are deleted."

"Consider it done, Caleb. We're moving now," the General replied without a moment's hesitation.

Caleb hung up, grabbed his coat, and walked out of the office. The assistants and executives who saw him pass trembled. The quiet, unassuming Caleb Sterling was gone. In his place was a man of immense, hidden power, ready to tear his own empire down to avenge his wife.
