Chapter 8 - The Miracle in the Dark

The surgeon took off his mask, a weary but genuine smile breaking through his exhaustion. "Mr. Sterling... it was incredibly close. Your wife suffered a severe placental abruption and significant internal bleeding. If she had arrived even ten minutes later, we would have lost them both."
Caleb’s breath hitched in his throat, his hands shaking.
"But," the surgeon continued, bracing Caleb’s shoulder. "She is a fighter. We managed to stabilize the hemorrhaging. Your wife is alive, and she is resting in the recovery room. And as for your son..."
A nurse stepped out from the secondary doors, holding a small, insulated bassinet. Inside, wrapped in a sterile blue blanket, was a tiny baby boy. He had a tuft of dark hair and was letting out a strong, healthy, indignant wail that echoed down the sterile corridor.
Caleb dropped to his knees beside the bassinet, tears finally streaming down his face. He reached out a trembling finger, and the tiny baby boy instinctively wrapped his entire hand around Caleb's finger, holding on with a surprising, fierce strength.
"He's perfect," Caleb whispered, his voice cracking with an overwhelming wave of love and relief. "He's so beautiful."
Behind him, Eleanor watched the scene, a hollow, bitter emptiness settling deep into her bones. She realized that she was completely excluded from this miracle. She had no right to this child, no right to this family, and no right to the future.

Before she could even take another step, two female state troopers approached her, their expressions grim. "Eleanor Sterling, you are being taken into custody for felony domestic assault and reckless endangerment resulting in grievous bodily harm. Please step forward."
As the handcuffs clicked around Eleanor’s wrists, she looked at her son one last time, hoping for a shred of mercy. But Caleb didn't even look up. He remained on his knees, staring at his son, completely erasing his mother from his life forever.
