Chapter 2 - The Matriarch’s Stage

An uncomfortable silence descended over the two hundred guests in the banquet hall. Vanessa’s expression wavered for a fraction of a second, but her vanity quickly reasserted itself. She smoothed her cream-colored designer dress, adjusted her diamond earrings, and flashed a triumphant smile at the room.
"Oh, look," Vanessa whispered loudly to Brandon. "Grandma must be announcing the trust fund allocations early this year. She wants us at the front."
Vanessa practically floated toward the stage, her heels clicking rhythmically against the polished marble floor. Brandon trailed behind her, straightening his silk tie, while Mason, Brooke, and Paige straightened their posture, preening under the gaze of the wealthy attendees. They genuinely believed this was their moment of glory.
I stood holding Sophie’s hand tightly. My daughter was shaking, burying her face against my arm. "Mom, can we please just go home?" she whimpered.
"Wait a moment, sweetie," I whispered, holding her close. "Let's see what Grandma is doing."
When Vanessa’s family reached the front of the stage, Grandma Eleanor did not hand them a microphone, nor did she smile. She remained standing behind the podium, her hands resting firmly on the polished wood.
"Tonight," Grandma Eleanor began, her voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room, "we gather to celebrate eighty years of my life. A life built on hard work, dignity, integrity, and respect for family."
Vanessa beamed, nodding graciously to the audience as if taking credit for her grandmother's legacy.
"However," Eleanor continued, her tone shifting into something terrifyingly sharp, "it appears that wealth without character creates nothing more than polished garbage."
The room gasped collectively. Vanessa’s smile froze on her face, her eyes widening in sudden alarm.
"Five minutes ago," Eleanor said, looking directly at the crowd, "I watched my granddaughter, Vanessa, use her position and her expensive clothes to humiliate a twelve-year-old girl. I heard her call her own niece 'stinky' in front of distinguished guests. I saw her mock a child’s hard work and creativity."
Murmurs rippled through the audience like a sudden gust of wind. High-society guests turned to look at Vanessa, their expressions turning from respect to disgust.
"Grandma... wait!" Vanessa stammered, her face turning pale. "It was just a lighthearted joke! Clara took it out of context—"
"Silence, Vanessa," Eleanor commanded, her voice cutting through the air like a steel blade. "You have lived forty years on this earth without learning a single shred of basic human decency. You wear five-thousand-dollar dresses paid for by my hard work, while pouring poison onto a child who possesses more talent, grace, and heart in her pinky finger than your entire household combined."

Eleanor turned her gaze toward Arthur Vance, her personal attorney, who was standing quietly near the side of the stage holding a thick leather folder.
"Arthur," Eleanor said clearly into the microphone. "Bring the documents."
