Chapter 3 - The Severed Lifeline

Arthur Vance stepped up to the podium, pulling several legal documents from his folder. The tension in the room was so thick it was nearly suffocating.

"For fifteen years," Grandma Eleanor addressed the entire room, "I have fully funded Vanessa and Brandon’s lifestyle. I paid off their home mortgage in the hills. I fully covered the tuition for Mason, Brooke, and Paige at elite private schools. I provided a monthly stipend of thirty thousand dollars from the Vance Family Trust to support their 'social endeavors.'"

Vanessa swallowed hard, her hand clutching Brandon’s suit sleeve so tightly her knuckles turned white. "Grandma, please... not in front of everyone..."

"You chose to humiliate my great-granddaughter in front of everyone," Eleanor replied coldly. "So you will receive your judgment in front of everyone."

Eleanor nodded to Arthur, who opened the first document.

"As of eight o'clock tonight," Eleanor declared, her voice resounding with absolute authority, "I have executed a complete revocation of all discretionary funds allocated to Vanessa and Brandon Vance. The monthly stipend is permanently terminated."

A collective gasp echoed through the hall. Brandon’s jaw dropped, and his glass nearly fell from his trembling fingers. "Eleanor! You can't do that! We have financial commitments! We have loans!"

"Then you had better find jobs that pay enough to cover them," Eleanor said without a trace of mercy. "Furthermore, the tuition payments for Mason, Brooke, and Paige at Saint Jude's Academy will cease at the end of this current semester. If you wish for them to remain in elite schooling, you will pay for it yourselves."

"Grandma, no!" Chloe, Vanessa’s eldest daughter, cried out, her face contorted in panic. "My friends are all there! You can't do this to us because of her!" She pointed a trembling, manicured finger at Sophie.

"You speak of your cousin with respect, Brooke, or you will find yourself walking home tonight," Eleanor snapped, her eyes flashing with anger. "You children have been raised as spoiled, cruel parasites who think money makes you superior. It ends tonight."

Eleanor took a second document from Arthur's hands.

"The family estate in Aspen, the yacht in San Diego, and the country club memberships registered under the family foundation will be immediately revoked from your access," Eleanor announced. "And finally, my will has been officially amended."

Vanessa looked as though she was about to faint. Her pristine cream dress seemed to sag against her trembling frame. "Grandma... please... I'm your granddaughter..."

"And Clara is my daughter, and Sophie is my great-granddaughter," Eleanor said softly, though her words carried the force of a hammer. "The entirety of the Vance Family Living Trust, including all real estate holdings, stock portfolios, and historical assets, has been restructured. Upon my passing, eighty percent will be placed into an irrevocable educational and charitable trust managed exclusively by Clara and Sophie."

The room erupted into quiet, shocked whispers. Vanessa looked as if she had been slapped across the face with an iron bar.

"You... you gave everything to them?" Vanessa shrieked, her artificial composure completely shattering. "To the quiet little teacher and her stinky little tailor?!"
