Chapter 5 - The Aftermath and Desperation

The morning after the gala, our quiet life in our small town was completely shattered, but not in the way Vanessa had intended.
News of Eleanor Vance’s public disinheritance of her eldest granddaughter spread through northern California's high-society circles like a wildfire. Local blogs, social columns, and business news outlets picked up the story. By noon, Brandon’s investment firm issued a polite press release stating that Brandon Vance was "taking an indefinite personal leave of absence"—a corporate euphemism for being quietly ousted due to severe reputation damage and loss of access to the Vance financial network.
In our modest two-story home, the phones rang endlessly. Reporters, distant relatives who hadn't called in years, and former acquaintances tried desperately to get a statement from me. I ignored them all, focusing entirely on keeping Sophie safe and calm.
At three o'clock that afternoon, a sleek black town car pulled up to our driveway. Grandma Eleanor stepped out, accompanied by Arthur Vance.
"Grandma," I said, opening the door and welcoming her inside. "You didn't have to come all the way down here."
"Nonsense, Clara," Eleanor said, stepping into our warm living room and setting her leather purse on the coffee table. "We have work to do. Vanessa is not the type of person to accept defeat quietly. She has lived her entire life feeling entitled to every breath I take and every dollar I possess."
Arthur Vance opened a laptop on our dining table. "Clara, as expected, Vanessa and Brandon have already hired a aggressive high-profile estate litigation attorney in San Francisco. They are preparing to file a lawsuit contesting Eleanor's mental capacity at the time the trust was restructured."
I gasped. "Mental capacity? Grandma is sharper than anyone I know!"
"It’s a standard, desperate tactic," Arthur explained calmly. "They will argue that Eleanor was unduly influenced by you, that she was emotionally unstable during the gala, and that the financial cuts were an illegal breach of implicit family trust agreements."
"Let them try," Eleanor scoffed, sipping a cup of tea I handed her. "I have undergone annual independent psychological evaluations for the past ten years specifically to prevent this exact move. My mind is perfectly sound, and my money belongs to me, not to parasites."
"However," Arthur added, his expression turning serious, "Vanessa is attacking on another front. She has contacted several local tabloids, offering paid interviews claiming that you, Clara, are an abusive, negligent mother who forced Sophie to live in squalor and wear hand-me-down rags while manipulating an elderly woman for her fortune."
My blood ran cold. "She’s targeting Sophie?"
May you like
"She wants to force a public settlement," Arthur said. "She thinks that if she creates enough nasty public scandal, you and Eleanor will pay her millions just to make her go away."
Before I could process the sheer evil of my sister's actions, the front window of my living room shattered violently.
