Chapter 7 - The Counter-Strike

Over the next two weeks, the war between the two sides of our family reached its boiling point.
Vanessa’s attempts to slander us in the press backfired spectacularly. Arthur Vance released the full, unedited video footage of the engagement gala to the media, along with the audio recording of Vanessa’s extortion phone call and the security camera footage of the brick incident.
The public reaction was swift and merciless. The narrative of the "poor, neglected niece" completely collapsed. Vanessa was exposed nationwide as a cruel, abusive socialite who had threatened her own family for money. Social media exploded with support for Sophie, with fashion influencers, designers, and everyday people praising her hand-stitched navy dress and calling her a model of modesty and true talent.
Despite the public humiliation, Brandon and Vanessa refused to back down. Bankrupt, facing eviction from their leased estate after their credit lines were frozen, and facing mounting legal bills, they doubled down on their lawsuit, demanding a court hearing to freeze Eleanor’s assets immediately.
The emergency court hearing was set for a rainy Tuesday morning at the San Francisco Superior Court.
Vanessa arrived wearing a dark grey suit, attempting to look modest and victimized, though her hollow eyes and anxious movements betrayed her desperation. Brandon sat beside her, looking haggard and twenty years older.
Across the aisle sat Grandma Eleanor, Arthur Vance, myself, and Sophie, who insisted on attending. Sophie wore a neatly tailored dark maroon dress she had designed herself during the past two weeks, her posture calm and dignified.
The judge, a stern woman named Justice Margaret Thomas, reviewed the thick binder of evidence on her desk for nearly twenty minutes before speaking.
"Mr. Miller," Justice Thomas addressed Vanessa’s attorney sternly. "You have filed a motion to declare Mrs. Eleanor Vance mentally incapacitated and place her estate under emergency conservatorship managed by your clients. On what grounds?"
Vanessa’s attorney stood up, clearing his throat nervously. "Your Honor, my clients contend that Mrs. Vance demonstrated sudden, irrational behavioral changes during a public event, cutting off her lifelong family heirs based on a minor verbal misunderstanding, under the undue influence of Clara Vance."
"A minor verbal misunderstanding?" Justice Thomas raised an eyebrow, picking up a document. "Is that what you call calling a twelve-year-old child 'stinky,' orchestrating an extortion attempt, and having a brick thrown through a residence window?"

"My clients deny involvement in the brick incident, Your Honor!" the attorney stammered.
"The police forensic report linked the silver sedan in the security video directly to a vehicle registered under Brandon Vance’s corporate account," Justice Thomas noted coldly. "And I have reviewed the video of the event in question. Mrs. Eleanor Vance appeared entirely lucid, articulate, and fully aware of her actions."
