Chapter 8 - The Courtroom Collapse

Justice Thomas turned her sharp gaze directly toward Vanessa and Brandon.

"In my thirty years on the bench," the judge declared, her voice echoing in the solemn courtroom, "I have rarely seen a display of such profound entitlement, cruelty, and legal bad faith. Mrs. Eleanor Vance is the sole legal owner of her wealth. She has every right to distribute, withhold, or donate her assets as she sees fit. You have no legal right to an inheritance while the benefactor is still living."

Vanessa gripped the edge of the table, her face turning crimson. "Your Honor! You don't understand! She ruined us! We have debts! Our children are being kicked out of school!"

"Silence, Mrs. Vance!" Justice Thomas struck her gavel sharply. "Your financial mismanagement is your own responsibility. The motion for conservatorship is denied with prejudice."

Arthur Vance immediately stood up. "Your Honor, we would like to present our cross-motion for a permanent civil harassment restraining order, as well as formal notification of pending felony extortion charges filed by the District Attorney’s office."

Justice Thomas reviewed Arthur’s filings quickly. "The evidence of harassment and extortion is overwhelming. I am granting a permanent five-hundred-yard restraining order against Vanessa and Brandon Vance protecting Eleanor, Clara, and Sophie Vance. Furthermore..."

The judge looked over at two bailiffs standing near the back of the courtroom.

"In light of the felony warrant issued this morning by the District Attorney for criminal extortion and conspiracy," Justice Thomas announced, "bailiffs, please take Vanessa and Brandon Vance into custody."

Vanessa shrieked as the bailiffs stepped forward, grabbing her arms and pulling her out of her chair. "No! You can't arrest me! I'm a Vance! I'm part of high society! Clara, tell them to stop! Grandma, please!"

Brandon put his head on the table, weeping openly as the handcuffs clicked around his wrists. He didn't fight back; he was completely broken.

"You brought this upon yourselves," Grandma Eleanor said quietly, standing up from her seat and looking down at her sobbing granddaughter. "You traded your family, your dignity, and your freedom for pride and greed."

As Vanessa was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs, her frantic screams fading down the hallway, Sophie reached out and took my hand.

"Mom," Sophie whispered softly. "Is it finally over?"

I looked down at my daughter, kissing her forehead. "Yes, sweetie. It's finally over."
