Chapter 2 - The Sound of Betrayal

The high-fidelity speakers embedded in the chapel walls hissed with static, then settled into a crisp, agonizingly clear recording.

The room held its collective breath.

“Please, Helena... stop,” Sofia’s voice rasped through the speakers. It was weak, breathy, and laced with physical agony, but unmistakably the voice of Ricardo’s late sister. “The doctor said... two drops... for the pain. You’re putting in the whole vial...”

A harsh, cold laugh echoed through the chapel—a voice everyone recognized instantly.

“Two drops will keep you alive for months, Sofia,” Helena’s recorded voice replied, devoid of any warmth or mercy. “And we simply don’t have months. The board vote is on Friday. If you die of an 'accidental medical complication' tonight, your shares automatically transfer to the estate trust—which I control as trustee. If you live until Friday, you sign those voting rights over to Ricardo.”

“Bia... is in the next room...” Sofia sobbed softly in the recording. “She’s... she’s watching...”

“She’s six, Sofia. She’ll believe whatever story I tell her,” Helena’s voice answered coldly. “Now keep still. The digital pump will log this as an automated malfunction. Nobody is going to investigate an invalid's weak heart.”

The recording ended with the sharp, rhythmic beep of a flatlining heart monitor, followed by the quiet rustle of synthetic gloves.

A collective gasp of sheer horror erupted throughout the chapel. Society matriarchs covered their mouths in disbelief; corporate board members stood up in shock, staring at the woman who had spent the last three days weeping crocodile tears over her sister-in-law's coffin.

Helena stood frozen near the altar, her arm still trapped in Ricardo’s iron grip. Her face had drained of all color, turning as grey and lifeless as ashes.

"You... you killed her," Ricardo whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying mixture of heartbreak and lethal fury. "You murdered my sister."

Helena’s eyes darted wildly across the room. The illusion was gone. The polished, elegant widow was exposed as a cold-blooded killer.

"She was destroying the company!" Helena hissed, her voice dropping into a desperate, monstrous whisper meant only for Ricardo. "She was going to hand the entire conglomerate over to you! I built that empire with your brother before he died! I deserved it, Ricardo! Not her, and certainly not that useless brat!"

"That brat," Ricardo said, his eyes burning with tears, "is the girl who just brought you down."

At that moment, the chapel doors swung open with a heavy thud.

It wasn't Helena’s security detail entering.

A squad of armed officers from the Metropolitan Homicide Division poured into the chapel, led by Lead Detective Marcus Vance. They moved swiftly down the aisle, their badges glinting under the soft memorial lights.

"Helena Vance," Detective Vance announced, unclipping a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. "You are under arrest for the aggravated murder of Sofia Grady. Put your hands behind your back."
