Chapter 6 - The Midnight Breach

It was 2:30 AM at the penthouse.
Outside, a spring thunderstorm was raging across the city, driving heavy rain against the glass panes of the high-rise tower. Thunder rumbled in the distance, setting a low, restless cadence for the night.
Inside, the penthouse was quiet.
Bia was fast asleep in her room, tucked beneath her favorite pink blanket, holding Clara the ragdoll.
Ricardo sat in his study down the hall, his sleeves rolled up, reading through corporate restructuring files under the dim light of a desk lamp. On the desk lay a small silver frame containing a photo of him and Sofia from their childhood, laughing on a beach.
Suddenly, a faint, metallic click vibrated through the floorboards.
It was so subtle that ninety-nine people out of a hundred would have missed it. But Ricardo had spent eight years in army special operations. His instincts flared instantly.
He reached into his desk drawer, retrieved his licensed firearm, and quietly chambered a round.
He moved out of the study like a shadow, barefoot, stepping silently across the carpeted hallway toward the living room.
Near the back service entrance—a hidden door paneled in dark walnut that led to a private express lift—three men clad in black tactical gear and night-vision goggles were quietly picking the lock of the secondary safety latch.
They had bypassed the garage security by using an obsolete master override code that Helena had kept in her personal safe.
"Target is in the master bedroom," one of the men whispered into his headset, his voice barely audible over the sound of the rain. "Grab the kid first. Secure the doll and the cloud keys. Eliminate the uncle if he interferes."
Ricardo didn't wait for them to enter further.
He stepped out from behind the marble pillar, his weapon raised, his voice cutting through the dark with lethal absolute authority.
"Drop your weapons! NOW!"
The lead intruder snapped his silenced pistol toward Ricardo and fired two rounds. The bullets slammed into the marble pillar, showering dust and stone splinters into the air.
Ricardo returned fire with precise, non-lethal discipline, striking the lead intruder in the shoulder and thigh, sending him crashing to the floor with a agonized cry.
The other two men charged forward, one swinging a heavy stun baton. Ricardo ducked under the blow, grabbed the man's wrist, twisted it back until the bone snapped, and slammed his elbow into the attacker's ribs, dropping him instantly.
The third intruder broke away—not toward Ricardo, but straight down the hallway toward Bia’s bedroom!
"NO!" Ricardo roared.
He sprinted down the corridor, tackling the man from behind just as his hand touched the doorknob of Bia’s room. They crashed heavily onto the floor, rolling across the hardwood. The intruder pulled a long combat knife, slashing wildly at Ricardo’s face.
Ricardo blocked the blade with his forearm, taking a deep cut across his flesh, but he didn't feel the pain. Adrenaline surged through his veins like liquid fire. He grabbed the intruder's throat with both hands, slamming his head back against the floorboards until the man went completely limp.
Breathing heavily, blood dripping from his arm onto the floor, Ricardo scrambled to his feet and pushed open Bia’s bedroom door.
Bia was sitting up in bed, her blanket pulled up to her chin, her eyes wide with terror, clutching her doll.
"Uncle Ricardo?" she whispered, trembling.
May you like
Ricardo dropped his gun onto the nightstand, rushed to the bed, and wrapped his arms around her, shielding her small body with his own.
"I'm here, Bia," Ricardo breathed, tears mixing with the sweat on his face. "I've got you. You're safe."
