Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Nursery

By late afternoon, the stock market had closed. Thanks to Ricardo’s decisive action and the public exposure of the conspiracy, Grady Enterprises' stock had recovered, stabilizing with Ricardo officially installed as Interim Chairman.
The media was hailing Ricardo as a hero—a loving brother and uncle who had protected his family and saved an iconic company from corrupt insiders.
But as night fell over the city, a darker threat was quietly gathering in the shadows.
In the high-security ward of the county jail, Helena sat in a cold holding cell. Her hair was unwashed, her silk dress replaced by a coarse orange jumpsuit. But her eyes were still sharp, burning with an insane, obsession-driven hatred.
She was permitted a fifteen-minute meeting with her lead defense attorney, a ruthless corporate fixer named Arthur Pendelton.
"The evidence against you is overwhelming, Helena," Pendelton said through the thick glass window, speaking into the telephone receiver. "The audio recording has been forensically validated. Travis is cooperating with the prosecution in exchange for a plea bargain. You are facing life without parole."
Helena’s hand gripped the plastic receiver so tightly her knuckles turned white. "I don't care about Travis. And I don't care about the trial."
"Then what do you care about?"
"The child," Helena whispered, her voice dropping into a terrifying, guttural hiss. "Bia is the only reason that recording exists. If Bia is unavailable to testify... if her credibility is destroyed, or if she disappears before the preliminary hearing, that audio file becomes inadmissible hearsay under state evidence laws."
Pendelton frowned. "Helena, you're in jail. You can't touch the kid. Ricardo has that penthouse locked down like a military bunker."
Helena leaned closer to the glass, a hideous, twisted smile playing on her lips. "Ricardo hired private security for the penthouse. But he forgot one thing."
"What?"
"I built that penthouse with his brother," Helena purred softly. "I know about the private service elevator in the underground parking garage—the one that isn't connected to the main building security grid. And I still have people on my payroll who owe me their lives."

Pendelton stared at her in shock. "Helena, if you do this—"
"Get me in touch with Vance's crew," Helena interrupted, her eyes cold as ice. "Tell them I will pay them five million dollars from my off-shore accounts in Grand Cayman. I don't want the child harmed until she hands over the master encryption key to Sofia’s cloud storage. Then... make sure neither she nor Ricardo ever reaches that courtroom."
