Chapter 8 - The Will and the Promise

Two months later, the legal storm had finally cleared.

Helena Vance appeared in court for her final sentencing hearing. Without a jury—having entered a mandatory guilty plea to avoid the death penalty—she stood before Judge Evelyn Cole in a solemn, packed courtroom.

This time, there was no lace veil, no expensive diamonds, and no icy composure. Helena looked broken, grey, and defeated.

"Helena Vance," Judge Cole declared, her voice echoing off the high marble walls with absolute, divine authority. "You acted out of unspeakable greed, betrayal, and malice. You murdered a woman who trusted you as family, and you attempted to destroy the life of an innocent child to cover your tracks. The state of Ohio will ensure you never walk free again."

Judge Cole brought her heavy wooden gavel down. CRACK.

"I sentence you to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, to be served at the Dayton Correctional Institution."

As guards led Helena away in heavy chains, she turned her head to glance at the gallery one last time.

Sitting in the front row was Ricardo, wearing a crisp navy suit. Beside him sat Bia, wearing a yellow sundress and her favorite patent-leather shoes.

Bia didn't look afraid. She didn't shrink back. She held her uncle’s hand tightly, looked Helena directly in the eye, and gave a small, quiet nod—a child who had faced the monster in the dark and won.

Helena bowed her head in bitter silence and disappeared through the heavy iron doors forever.

An hour later, Ricardo and Bia sat in Sarah Vance’s quiet, sunlit law office for the formal reading of Sofia’s final will and testament.

Sarah opened a thick gold-embossed envelope and began reading Sofia’s handwritten words:

“If you are reading this, it means my fight is over, and my beloved brother Ricardo has brought my truth to the light. To my darling daughter Bia: Everything I ever built, everything I ever owned, was for you. You are my heart, my brave little girl. To my brother Ricardo: I leave you full guardianship of Bia, along with the executive trust of Grady Enterprises. I don't care about the money or the buildings, Ricardo. I only ask one thing: teach Bia to laugh again. Show her the ocean. Tell her that her mommy loved her more than the stars in the sky.”

Tears flowed silently down Ricardo’s cheeks. He reached down, pulling Bia up into his lap, hugging her close as the little girl wiped a tear from his face with her thumb.

"I promise, Sofia," Ricardo whispered into the quiet office. "I promise."
