Chapter 7 - The Unravelling

Within twenty minutes, the penthouse was filled with federal agents and city police.

The three intruders were handcuffed, bloodied, and dragged away in stretchers.

The investigation into the breach yielded immediate, devastating results for Helena. One of the captured mercenaries, faced with federal terrorism and kidnapping charges, broke within an hour of interrogation, providing a complete audio recording of his phone conversation with Helena’s attorney, Arthur Pendelton.

By sunrise, Pendelton was arrested in his luxury home for solicitation of murder and witness tampering.

In her jail cell, Helena was stripped of all privileges. She was moved to an isolated, high-security solitary confinement unit, monitored twenty-four hours a day by video surveillance. Her legal defense team shattered; no respectable lawyer in the state would touch her case.

Later that afternoon, Detective Vance met Ricardo at the police headquarters.

"It’s over for her, Ricardo," Vance said, placing a steaming cup of coffee in front of Ricardo, whose arm was neatly bandaged under his jacket. "The federal government has taken over the prosecution. With the mercenary's testimony, the encrypted phone recording, and Travis's confession, Helena is facing three counts of conspiracy to commit murder, murder in the first degree, and witness intimidation."

"Will Bia have to testify in court?" Ricardo asked quietly, his primary concern always focused on the little girl's fragile heart.

Detective Vance shook his head with a gentle smile. "No. The grand jury met an hour ago. Given the overwhelming physical and digital evidence, the judge ruled that Bia’s recorded forensic interview from the hospital, combined with her mother’s audio file, is more than sufficient. We won't need to put that brave little girl on the witness stand."

Ricardo let out a long, heavy sigh that felt like a weight he had carried for months finally lifting off his shoulders.

"Thank you, Marcus," Ricardo said, shaking the detective's hand firmly.

"Don't thank me, Ricardo," Vance replied. "Thank your sister. She was smart enough to build a trap that even Helena couldn't escape from. And thank that little girl of yours. She carried the key through the fire."
