Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Surprise

At 1:45 PM, the glass-and-steel skyscraper of Sterling Logistics headquarters stood quiet in the commercial district.

Julian sat in his corner executive office, frantically trying to tie his tie. His eyes were bloodshot, his forehead drenched in a cold sweat. Across the desk, his chief financial officer, a nervous man named Todd, was pacing back and forth with a stack of red-labeled folders.

"Julian, we're ruined if they look at the Q3 shipping logs!" Todd panicked. "We listed thirty phantom cargo containers as active collateral for the First National loan! If Apex’s forensic auditors find out—"

"Shut up, Todd!" Julian barked, slamming his fist onto the mahogany desk. "We just need to stall them! I’ll talk to their lead auditor, offer them a consultant fee, and buy us three weeks to fix the numbers!"

Downstairs in the main lobby, the heavy glass doors swung open.

A fleet of three black Suburbans parked along the red curb outside. Out stepped eight sharp-suited corporate attorneys from Vance & Associates, led by Sarah Vance, the most feared trial attorney in the state.

Walking in the middle of the group was a woman wearing an ivory Chanel wool suit, emerald earrings, and red-bottomed Louboutin heels. Her hair was styled in flawless waves, radiating an aura of untouchable, royal authority.

It was me.

The front desk receptionist at Sterling Logistics gasped as the entourage swept past the security turnstiles.

"Ma'am! You can't go up there without a badge!" the receptionist called out, rushing from behind her desk.

Sarah Vance stepped forward, flashing a high-court federal subpoena and an Apex Capital executive badge. "Clear the elevator," Sarah ordered smoothly. "We are here for the court-ordered asset inspection."

The elevator ride to the top floor was silent. When the silver doors slid open on the executive floor, Julian was standing near the water cooler, trying to put on a courageous face for his staff.

When he looked toward the elevator and saw me walking toward him, flanked by a dozen high-powered attorneys, his mind completely stalled.

He blinked once. Twice.

"Sienna?" Julian gasped, his mouth agape. "What... what are you doing here? Did you follow me to my office to apologize?"

He looked at my ivory Chanel suit, then down at the three-carat emerald dangling from my neck—a piece that cost more than his entire house.

"And where did you rent those clothes?!" Julian snapped, his voice rising in hysterical confusion. "Are you out of your mind?! I told you I didn't want a scene!"

Sarah Vance stepped between us, holding a thick leather portfolio.

"Mr. Julian Sterling," Sarah declared, her voice echoing through the open-plan office, causing every employee to stop working and stare. "I am Sarah Vance, Managing Partner of Vance & Associates, representing Apex Capital Partners and Miss Sienna Vance."

Julian frowned, his brain struggling to assemble the pieces. "Miss... Sienna Vance? Who the hell is Sienna Vance?"

I stepped forward, taking off my sunglasses, looking at my husband of less than twenty-four hours with total, absolute indifference.

"You knew me as Sienna Montgomery, Julian," I said softly, my voice carrying an icy clarity. "Montgomery was my mother's maiden name. I took it two years ago when I decided to live among ordinary people to see if true love existed without a price tag."

I took a sharp step closer, my heels clicking loudly against the marble tile.

"My full legal name is Sienna Vance. Primary heir to the Vance family trust, founder of the Apex Capital Global Fund, and... as of nine o'clock this morning, the owner of every single dollar of debt your failing company owes."

Julian’s eyes widened until they looked ready to burst from his skull. He staggered backward, his heels catching on the carpet, slamming his lower back against the reception desk.

"N-No..." Julian whispered, his face turning as white as a sheet. "No... that's impossible. Your parents are teachers!"

"My parents retired from teaching twenty years ago to manage our family's educational charitable foundation," I corrected smoothly. "You never cared to ask about their foundation work because you were too busy bragging about your four-million-dollar house."

I gestured to Sarah, who handed a thick stack of blue-bound legal documents directly to Julian’s shaking hands.

"This is a formal demand for immediate acceleration of all outstanding debts," I announced. "You have forty-eight hours to produce twenty-three million dollars in cash, or Apex Capital Partners will seize Sterling Logistics, freeze your personal accounts, and initiate criminal proceedings for loan fraud."

Julian dropped the files onto the floor, the papers scattering across his leather shoes.

"Sienna... please..." Julian whimpered, stepping forward, his hands raised in desperate supplication. "Honey... we're married! We're husband and wife! This is just a huge misunderstanding!"

" Husband?" I laughed—a rich, cold sound that chilled everyone in the room. "You put a three-thousand-dollar monthly price tag on my head this morning, Julian. You told me I wasn't worth a corner of your living room."

May you like

I leaned in close, whispering in his ear so only he could hear:

"Welcome to the real world, Julian. And by the way... my thirty-five-million-dollar estate has seven maids. Yours won't even have a janitor by Friday."
