Chapter 7 - The Plea at the Gates

By Friday morning, the rain had turned into a thick, miserable drizzle that hung low over the city skyline.

At 8:00 AM, the massive wrought-iron gates of Maplewood Manor remained closed, their intricate gold scrollwork glinting against the grey morning light.

Standing outside the security gates, soaking wet from head to toe, were Julian and Eleanor Sterling.

Julian’s expensive wool suit was ruined, heavy with muddy rainwater. Eleanor was shivering violently in a thin raincoat, her designer shoes covered in street sludge. They had walked three miles from the nearest bus stop because they didn't have enough cash left for a taxi fare.

Julian pressed the metal intercom button beside the gate pillar.

"Please..." Julian pleaded into the speaker, his voice cracking with exhaustion. "Sienna... please open the gate! It's Julian! I need to talk to you!"

A crackle of static echoed from the speaker, followed by the crisp, cultured voice of James, the head butler.

"Mr. Sterling," James said calmly. "Miss Vance is currently enjoying her breakfast. She does not receive unscheduled visitors—especially those under active law enforcement monitoring."

"James, please!" Julian cried, grabbing the wet iron bars with both hands. "Tell her I'm sorry! Tell her I'll sign anything! I'll tear up the Financial Responsibility Agreement! I'll kneel on the porch and apologize to her in front of the maids! Just ask her to stop the lawsuits!"

In the grand dining room of Maplewood Manor, fifty yards away, I sat at a long mahogany table decorated with fresh white lilies.

Through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors, I could see the tiny figures of Julian and Eleanor shivering outside the perimeter gates. I took a delicate sip of fresh orange juice, feeling completely unmoved.

"Miss Sienna," James said, stepping into the dining room with a cordless tablet. "Mr. Sterling is refusing to leave the main gate. Should I contact local law enforcement for trespassing?"

"No need, James," I said softly, wiping my lips with a linen napkin. "Let them stay there a little longer. It builds character."

Sarah Vance stepped into the dining room, carrying a silver briefcase.

"Good morning, Sienna," Sarah smiled, placing a single page of heavy bond paper in front of me. "The District Attorney’s office has finalized the grand jury indictment. Julian Sterling will be formally charged with eight counts of corporate fraud, tax evasion, and forgery at two o'clock today."

I looked at the document. "And his mother?"

"Eleanor Sterling has been named as a co-conspirator due to her signature on several offshore account opening documents," Sarah explained. "She is facing secondary financial fraud charges."

I stood up from the table, my long silk robe trailing behind me. I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass door, looking out at the rain.

"Two days ago, Sarah," I reflected softly, "Julian told me that out there in the real world, I could work my entire life and not afford a corner of his living room."

May you like

"A tragic lack of foresight on his part," Sarah agreed smoothly.

"Let's go down to the gate," I said, a quiet, decisive smile touching my lips. "It's time to close this chapter."
