Chapter 5 - The Frozen Accounts

The downward spiral of Julian Sterling accelerated with terrifying speed.

By Thursday morning, the forensic audit of Sterling Logistics had uncovered a goldmine of illegal activity: double-entry bookkeeping, tax evasion, and six million dollars in unallocated offshore wire transfers.

Federal financial regulators issued an emergency freeze on all corporate accounts affiliated with Sterling Logistics.

Because Julian had personally guaranteed his business loans using his residential house and personal checking accounts as collateral, the freeze extended directly to his personal finances.

Julian sat in his living room, staring at his banking app on his phone.

ACCOUNT BALANCE: $0.00 [FROZEN BY COURT ORDER]

CREDIT CARD STATUS: DECLINED / TERMINATED

His four-million-dollar house, which had been the source of so much arrogance twenty-four hours ago, was now a tomb. The air conditioning had shut off because the automated utility payment had failed.

The heavy front door burst open. Eleanor rushed inside, her hair disheveled, her expensive makeup smeared with tears.

"Julian!" Eleanor wailed, dropping her designer handbag onto the sofa. "My credit card was declined at the grocery store! My country club membership was revoked! The manager kicked me out in front of everyone! What is happening?!"

Julian didn't look up from his phone. His eyes were hollow, dark circles bruised beneath his sockets.

"She’s ruined us, Mom," Julian whispered, his voice trembling like a dying candle. "Sienna isn't a PR assistant. Her real name is Sienna Vance. She's the primary owner of Apex Capital."

Eleanor froze in the middle of the foyer, her breath catching in her throat. "V-Vance? As in... the Vance Family Trust? The trillion-dollar conglomerate?"

"Yes!" Julian screamed, slamming his phone onto the coffee table, shattering the glass top into a spiderweb of cracks. "She lied to me for two years! She pretended to be poor to test me! And we... we tried to extort three thousand dollars a month from her!"

Eleanor collapsed onto the sofa, clutching her chest. "Oh my god... oh my god... Julian, you have to fix this! Call her! Apologize! Tell her it was all my idea! Tell her I forced you to sign that paper!"

Julian let out a bitter, hysterical laugh. "Fix it?! Mom, she brought twelve corporate attorneys to my office yesterday! They found the offshore accounts! The federal authorities are opening a criminal fraud case against me right now!"

Before Eleanor could reply, the heavy iron front gates outside rattled violently.

Julian walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows and looked out.

A giant yellow tow truck had parked in his driveway. Two men in work uniforms were attaching heavy steel chains to Julian’s prized possession—his hundred-and-fifty-thousand-dollar Porsche 911 Turbo.

Behind the tow truck stood a process server wearing a dark suit, holding a bright yellow envelope.

Julian opened the front door, shouting wildly across the lawn. "Hey! Stop! What are you doing with my car?!"

The process server stepped onto the porch, handing the yellow envelope directly to Julian's trembling chest.

"Julian Sterling?" the process server asked professionally. "You have been officially served. This is a court order for the immediate repossession of all personal vehicles and movable luxury assets securing your defaulted debt to Apex Capital Partners."

The process server pulled out a second document.

"And this is an emergency eviction notice for this property. You have twenty-four hours to vacate 142 Maple Drive."

Eleanor shrieked from the hallway, falling to her knees on the marble floor.

Julian watched in complete horror as his Porsche was lifted into the air and towed away down the street, leaving behind only the black tire marks on the empty driveway.
